Moore: Cowboys' words after CT scan suggest Romo suffered more than contusion

IRVING — Raise your hand if you thought Tony Romo would play every snap of every game.

How many of you were convinced that a quarterback unable to practice more than four consecutive days in training camp, one who skips the Wednesday practice leading up to games to concentrate on core exercises to strengthen his back, would sail through the regular season without an issue?

Romo’s health is an overriding theme to this season. The only question was when it would significantly impact the Cowboys’ preparation for a game.

The answer is Week 9 against Arizona.

The quarterback’s status for Sunday’s game is uncertain as he deals with back pain from an undisclosed injury. That puts the spotlight on backup Brandon Weeden, who could make his first start in a Cowboys uniform...

... but no one is calling it a contusion.

That suggests the injury is more significant.

“I don’t want to get into specifics about what it is,” said Romo, who did divulge the injury is not to a disk or related to his previous two back surgeries. “It will be something you’ll look at each day, figure out a way to manage it and go from there.

“It has nothing to do with back surgery or anything like that. It could have happened years ago and it would have been the same thing. It’s part of playing football.”

Romo is not playing in this game if he doesn't practice this week. Weeden is getting all of the first team reps, I don't believe for a minute that this will be a game time decision. I don't know why the Cowboys take this approach when it comes to discussing Romo's injuries. They've been doing this for years when it comes to Romo.

So with our emphasis on running the football do we go with a 60-70% Romo or a 100% Weeden? Weeden may be able to move in pocket a little better, take off and run if he has to and seemed to be better then what I remember watching him with Cleveland.

I'll be honest, it looked like the had on a back and rib protecting vest.

So I guess I don't really see how it get a contusion through that protective plate and padding! Its not like the guy "superman kneed" him in an MMA fight to bare skin...

Have you ever had a thigh bruising through a thigh pad? They get your notice, believe me...

Never bought the contusion story. DMN had a photo of him laying on the ground after the hit. Grimace on his face looked like more than a contusion. Looked like I hurt so bad that I cant move.

i think he also could have suffered a kidney or spleen issue from the location of the blow...similar to witten

I agree... The knee was from the photos were very close to the kidney region. The pain from that would be
debilitating. We need Romo for the long term not one game....

I'm not a doctor nor have I played one on TV, I have no idea if there is anything more than a deep bruise, there is a lot of speculation from the outside of what it could be but no one knows. What we do know is if he can deal with the pain and discomfort he will play. My guess is Romo will play.

That was a certified kidney shot. If he kneed him under his ribcage from the front then it would be the spleen.

Less than 50% Romo. He's a walking zombie at this point. One shot and he's good as gone.
