I agree. It was the defense that lost that game. Some may be sorry what they wish for. I rather checkdowns all day rather then turnovers. Weeden is capable of a lot worse. And then you can always say next man up but there is no guarantee Cassel would be better. While I think he's better than Weeden, he's not on a team for a reason.

It's interesting. I think those of us who really don't like Weeden were pretty happy with what we got last week. We don't want him to push it because we suspect what we'll get is a lot worse.

In a way, it's a shame that the perception after last week's game was so negative. If he starts pushing the ball, we're going to be in trouble.

My biggest beef with this cat is that he plays scared, he lacks confidence, he has little touch on the ball, and when he makes a mistake he stays down on himself and gets worse.

The only cure for this is to keep playing but alas he's a backup so chances are he will never get the experience that will either make or break him.

So what can you do to minimize the implosions?

Keep him on a ground and pound short game leash because without Dez throwing "deep" is a liability.

Unless we get creative and lucky, I don't expect much over 10 yds....

IMHO, Weeden just appears to look for the incoming pressure first BEFORE he even looks downfield and if he does see any one looking like they may come through, he will check down. Of course, this happens a lot and therefore he checks down a lot. Can't read defenses worth a lick, and does not have the patience to hang in the pocket with the massive dlineman trying to separate him from his memory. Still makes the mistakes a rookie will make and he ain't no spring chicken.

How the heck he is our backup QB is still a mystery to me. Well that,...... and why we drive on the parkway but park in the driveway?

Weeden's a whipping boy and there's no getting people to drop it. It's a race to come down hardest on him since he's a safe target. But you're right.

The sad fact is he's capable of playing a lot worse. We'll have a shot if he plays as well as he did in ATL each week, minus the big stupid turnover. But if he gets the awful defensive support he had last week, we're in for a long ride.

I think that talk quiets after this week. It's obvious that he can throw down field. I mean he hit twill downfield beautifully in the Colts game last year.

I think the problem was the coaches tried to reign him in a little too much, and he was rattled a bit by that interception.

With time he will be fine.

The funny thing is, Romo doesn't throw down field much either, yet no one is bringing that up.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Weeden executes downfield throws better than Tony, but of course it's more than execution. I think the right reads and savvy vet moves come with a little time-- time the chicken littles don't want to allow him, and instead want a guy who would likely be worse given his unfamiliarity with the offense and team.

If not "throwing downfield" keeps him from turning the ball over, then stick with the short game.

I like to mock Weeden as much as the next guy, but the offensive miscues; penalties and poor blocking in particular, and the defensive performance are much more concerning to me than the downfield passing issue.

Although i fully expect Rob Ryan to load the box every down so it may be smart to just come out heaving the rock.

I still don't understand why the backup QB is scrutinized this closely. This is getting ridiculous.

Both Dunbar and Beasley seem to love a stacked box area...

It's amazing to me how everyone on this board seems to have magically forgotten how well Weeden played for much of the Falcons game.

A checkdown for a solid gain is a GOOD play. When he stepped up in the pocket and delivered a strike to Witten down to the 1 yard line, that was a GREAT play.

Weeden didn't let us down; the defense did.

This whole hatred of checking the ball down - even when it results in a solid gain - especially needs to stop. Tom Brady has made a Hall of Fame career out of check downs and taking what the D gives him.

But Weeden didn't take what the defense gave him. ......I'm not a Brady supporter but don't compare Brady and Weeden in anything

I'm not saying Weedon should go full-on Don Coryell - just that he needs to attempt one or two deep balls per quarter at minimum to give the underneath passes and the running game a reasonable shot at success.

And next week they get Rolando McClain And Hardy back... then they can be more conservative - cuz those boys will KILL... KILLL... KILLLL!

(Did I mention Hardy and McClain will kill?)
