If people would watch the video of the interview and put their thinking caps on, they would know that Terence Newman was talking about
leadership on the question right before the one he answered that has been at the center of this.
Tony Romo's leadership is discussed right before the interviewer asks the next question.
The next question deals with Troy Aikman being critical of Romo not understanding what being the QB of the Dallas Cowboys means.
Remember, Aikman was critical of Romo's pre-playoff game trip to Cabo and critical of Romo not understanding or "caring" about the
perception of him as a
QB or leader of the Cowboys. Parcells warned Romo about being a celebrity QB, and Aikman understands this concept. If the players on your team start believing the things being said about you
in the media, your leadership can be undermined in the huddle and on the team.
So, when Aikman's name is mentioned,
the perception of Romo in the media is what that whole Troy Aikman critique was about.
Use your brains.
The guy asks Terence Newman this:
In your opinion, is he (Aikman) wrong when he says that?
Look at the
context of the question I have highlighted when you analyze Newman's response. Plus, watch the entire interview before you make an evaluation. Newman expresses confindence in Tony Romo's leadership ability in that interview.
Here is Newman's answer. He doesn't use the word "leadership", but he is clearly talking about the big picture (of being a QB) when he uses the 'generic' term quarterback.
He's not attacking Tony Romo's ability on the field like JJT (DMN) asserted.
Newman is essentially
agreeing with Aikman about how the
perception the media gives the public about Romo, has hurt Romo or taken away from him being a quaterback.
Romo's image or the perception of that image has been used against Romo after poor games. Newman knows this and explains how it has been used against him (what "they" /the media /say) in his answer to the question. You know, the part NFL Network left out.
The media has attacked Romo and taken away the fact that he works hard and is a great team player by portraying him as a "Hollywood slacker", and they (the media) have blamed Romo's poor games or months on his "Hollywood" connections,
which is his famous girlfriend. Didn't the Cowboys play a game in Carolina where the fans wore Jessica Simpson masks?
Newman defends Romo from this perception by telling all the "things" being said about him in the media.
Newman's answer:
Ah, I think that with the situation Tony was kind of in, I think that kind of maybe hurt him a little bit. You know, being a first year starter... Then, you had the limelight with his girlfriend and situations of that nature. It's going to take away from him being a QB, you know being a successful QB.
Read what he said in this part of his answer. Newman agrees with Aikman. What was Aikman talking about?
Perception
If there is any
doubt Newman was referring to the perception of Tony Romo as a quarterback, then, these next words should erase those doubts. Here is what NFL Network deleted from the quote that they put up on the screen.
Why did they delete it? Because, it is the heart of Newman's quote, and it gives
meaning to what he is trying to communicate.
He won 13 games, and everything was perfect, but now, after this past season, it was, you know, is he doing enough for the team, is he working hard enough. He's got this girlfriend... I think that once he inherited the starting QB job, and then, you know, his relationship got into the national media attention,
I think that was something that definately hurt and
took away from Tony Romo being a great quarterback.
The bolded part is Newman telling you how the media attacked him.
Chris Berman said Romo just improvised in games and gave the perception that Romo just walked out on the field and played.
Newman is defending Romo from this perception while agreeing with Aikman's opinion that Romo's perception has hurt him or matters. Aikman said that perception matters, and Newman says that
perception has hurt Romo. That is what Newman was saying. That's is what he meant. A little comprehension and analytical skills goes a long way.
It's clear to me, anyway. I said this weeks ago, and this wasn't a story two or three weeks ago. JJT made it a story. People jumped on Newman when Taylor spun this story. Many of you got sucked, and some love the opportunity to bash Newman, no matter what.
Again, where did Newman criticise Romo's ability? I didn't see it. Where did Newman talk
bad about Jessica Simpson? Where did he say that Romo shouldn't date her?
Jessica Simpson
That is one reason JJT came out with this story, imo. It gives some at the DMN the opportunity to get Romo and Simpson in the headlines. JJT hides behind Newman and uses him as a proxy to mention Romo's relationship with Simpson, imo. That's one goal, imo.
However, I think Terence Newman is more of a target than I once thought. The NLF Network's headlines kind of used Newman (taken out of context) to attack Romo.
JJT seemed to go at Newman more. Newman was more than just collateral damage for JJT, imo.
