I have been saying that all along. I hope I am wrong, but I just don't see him being the next D. Ware at right end. I think his reasonable projection is a solid but unspectacular player. Good against the run and maybe 6 sacks per year off of the left side.

Did you know that Michael Bennett only has 1 double-digit sack total in his entire career? And, I think we ALL know he is regarded as one of the PREMIER DE's in the game today.

There is a lot of excitement around the Cowboys after drafting Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton in the first round of last weekend's NFL draft. Some view him as a potential All Pro one day while Charlton himself has promised he is "just touching the tip of the iceberg."
But some are not convinced about that just yet. ESPN's Mike Sando spoke with some coaches, executives and evaluators about each team's draft and one NFL personnel guy threw some cold water on those expecting Charlton to put up monster sack numbers.

"Taco [Charlton] is a lot like Kevin Dodd, who came out of Clemson last year for Tennessee," the evaluator told ESPN. "He is not your bend-the-edge, get-to-the-quarterback guy. He is a set-the-edge player who is talented -- really long. He is a starting-level, solid defensive end but not going to be the consistent double-digit sack guy."

SportsDay's Brandon George agrees that Charlton is likely not a starter as a rookie but believes that there is a lot of room for growth for the 6-foot-6, 277-pound former Wolverine.

"Does he start there right away? I don't know. The fact that he has not been great against the run, maybe you play him on just pass rushing downs early in his career, let him get going, get his feet underneath him before his kind of an every-down player for you," George said in the latest edition of the Candidly Cowboys podcast. "I think that the freak athleticism is what turned the Cowboys on to him and just the fact that they feel like he's on the rise. Basically you haven't seen the best of him. He started that one year at Michigan and that's partially a concern because he only got that one year to start but that first year he started he had 9.5 sacks. He was a difference maker so maybe this guy has a lot more to offer."

NFL Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf, the current Michigan television analyst, agrees that Charlton should improve in the long-term for Dallas.

"I think he's still an ascending player," Dierdorf told ESPN Dallas' J Dub City. "He's not one of those guys that you say, 'He's peaked and this is all we're gonna get.' I think Taco Charlton is getting better every game."

DC. Is saying D. Ware is working out with Crawford and S. THOMAS. ARE you kidding me? He's a turncoat helping a San Francisco 49ers! He should tell S. THOMAS to find someone else to work out with.
NO. Solomon Thomas is a local kid who knows Ware.
Think before you post.

Taco has a very high floor because he can hop in the lineup now and be a long. athletic player for you.
IF he gains strength and develops 2-3 pass rush moves to go with his spin he can be a 4-5 time Pro Bowler.

Whatever the case his selection at 28 made a lot of sense for this team and the only people who don't realize that are mad about passing on their pet cat.

He was mocked as high as 15 throughout the process.
9.5 sacks in his final season is legit production and no one ignores a guy his size with his athleticism.
Guys a lean 277 pound dude with genetics and frame to get to 290 easily with little to no bodyfat gain or loss of movement skills.
Would not at all shock me to see him be considered the best SDE in football in 4-5 years but it's hardly a given he will be nearly so good.

Great example of how you write a headline to get views.

The actual quotes are far more pragmatic and optimistic than, "Double digit sacks? Never gonna happen."

Will McClay: Taco Charlton better fit for Cowboys than T.J. Watt

"The No. 1 thing is he played four different positions when he was at Michigan," said McClay. "He had 9.5 sacks last year. You turn on the tape, you watch him go against guys that first round, second round draft picks in this draft. He has prototypical size and he can play all over the place. When I turn on the tape to watch him, I saw him do athletic things that guys who are 6'5", 270 lb. with 34" arms shouldn't be able to do."

"We really liked T.J. as well," McClay said, via The Dallas Morning News. "A lot of times people will see the [scouting] combine numbers and say a guy is explosive. There were a number of players that were in this draft that had great workout numbers.

"We watch the tape.

"I think T.J. Watt's deal was we felt like he could potentially play defensive end for us, but it was a projection. It was a projection of a guy that had converted from tight end, now he's going to try to play defensive end in this scheme, and probably a better fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker because they do different jobs than 4-3 defensive ends. Not to say that he wouldn't will himself to being [a 4-3 end].

"He's going to be a very good NFL player. But when you put all those things together and you're making a first round pick, you want to go for the guy that has done it, that you think has the potential and the upside to play the way that you want to play."

At this point who really cares what scouts say? Its a done deal and we will see what we get. I am more worried about our new CB holding their own than I am about Charlton getting 5 sacks or 10.

Seriously, do these even watch tape.to say Taco can't bend around the edge is laughable. The guys who haven't shown they can actually bend around the edge are Takk and Watt.

Seems like any DE that doesn't fit the perfect mold of 6'3/6'4 250-265lbs gets lazily pigeon holed into "only a LDE" that won't get many sacks. But if you actually watch the tape Taco shows more natural bend as a pass rusher than Harris, Takk, and Watt. There's only 1 way to get to the qb according to most people, and that's by being a super "twitchy" athlete that rubs around the OT. If only there weren't dozens of players that proved that wrong...

How come "journalists" wont name sources, but will name website guys without a second thought. A source says Charlton is not a bend the edge type player, when you can clearly see in any video you watch of the kind he can bend the edge very well. This kind of statement makes me think these guys just lie and put in their own opinions and insert the word source to try and give it credibility. But will quickly add the name of some website writer that says something along the lines that fit his article subject.

And fans will eat this up. Sports journalism is dead, their all just glorified bloggers now. All looking for shock value and trying to create story instead of reporting it.
