Randy Gregory says smoking marijuana is not his problem. The Cowboys’ second round pick blames his off the field concerns on immaturity and stubbornness.
The pass rushing specialist, who had 17.5 sacks and 29 tackles for loss in two seasons at Nebraska, chatted about that Friday night during an ESPN Radio interview. The audio was played again Monday during “The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley” on KESN-FM 103.3.
“That’s something I’ve definitely been working on and something I can definitely fix,” Gregory said. “I’m 22 years old but I think I carry myself real well and I think I need to carry myself a little bit better as far as decision making goes. I think a lot of people are getting tied up in the weed and think it’s just a weed problem. I don’t think it’s a weed problem. I think it’s decision making. I think I’m immature. I’m definitely working on that. I want to prove everyone wrong and I want to do it with this team. I think this is the best team I can do that with.”
Gregory, who failed a drug test at the scouting combine in February, was then asked specifically about recent marijuana use.
“I haven’t touched it,” he said. “I’m feeling real good, too. This is a high in itself, to be honest. I’m high on life right now, and I don’t want to lose this high.”
The reason for his excitement is largely because of the team that drafted him, the support system that will be in place and the defensive coordinator that will be guiding him on a daily basis throughout the season.
Rod Marinelli, the director of that Cowboys defense, showed Gregory film of Simeon Rice during his pre-draft visit. In five seasons working with Marinelli, Rice totaled 67.5 sacks.
Marinelli told Gregory that he could have that type of NFL career. Gregory said the thought was “eye-opening.”
“One of the main things I learned,” he later added, “is that this could be gone in a minute.”
