An incident in July could play a part in the outcome of the Cowboys' season opener in September against the Giants.

Giants defensive end Jason-Pierre Paul remains hospitalized after a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July. It charred several fingers and parts of both hands and there is a potential for nerve damage according to NJ.com.

On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Pierre-Paul could miss training camp and the start of the season, but the team is still gathering more medical info.

Pierre-Paul wreak havoc in the Cowboys and Giants' first meeting last year, recording six tackles and two sacks in Dallas' 31-21 win, the Cowboys offensive line shut him down in the second meeting. Pierre-Paul netted just two tackles in a 31-28 Cowboys win.

I'd bet his hand isn't going to be fully functional for quite some time.

I think it means that he likely has 3rd degree burns and the deepest layer of skin is burned and that is where all the nerve endings are located. There is a great risk of infection because the skin is no longer a barrier to germs. The skin won't regenerate and scar tissue will have to form which is not as tough or flexible as your skin. He will still be able to move his hand normally but it will take a long time to reach anywhere close to full functionality. And yes, there will be pain.

Hard to tell the severity from reports, but it sounds severe enough to be season threatening.

Well no matter what the Giants will not pull the Franchise tag from him till they see the extent of the injury.
If really bad they may sign him to a game contract incentive.
Then evaluate it after this year.
IF he is hurt and misses regular season the Giants will could get CAP savings if they have the contract structured, other than a franchise tagged, to help them on games played.
It could be tricky as JPP lost some bargining power with the accident.
