IRVING -- The recipe for success in the NFL is not that complicated, as Jason Garrett is quick to explain. Just make more big plays than the opponent, attain a positive turnover differential, win the fourth quarter and presto! It's time to celebrate a victory.

Garrett's motivational messages that have been printed on team-issued T-shirts in recent seasons reflect his belief in this formula.

The motto "Finish!" spells out Garrett's desire to win the final 15 minutes and overtime of each game.

The phrase "The ball. The ball. The ball" is another example of the emphasis Garrett places on avoiding giveaways and securing takeaways.

And the slogan "Bam!" reinforces Garrett's exhortations about the importance of making momentum-changing plays (runs of 12-plus yards, passes of 16-plus yards) while preventing the opposition from matching them.

Obviously turnovers are important but anybody that is counting on winning games off of turnovers is living in fantasy land. Turnovers should ALWAYS be considered a bonus and not a staple of a winning formula. You CANNOT count on turnovers from the other team. You can however count on limiting them on your own team.

He'll take the brunt of the criticism for the disastrous decision to have Brandon Weeden as the backup QB.

Now if he was the father of that idea then he deserves the criticism but if he isn't, if this was a front office decision, he is blameless to me for this season falling apart.

Not a bad article for anybody taking the time to actually read it.

Bingo! I like Jason but you cannot count on turnovers as part of a game plan for success.

Hope is not a strategy.

Right. Im all for turnovers, but not as part of a strategy. I know some posters here and other places act as if its a strategy, but IMO its no more of a strategy than counting on scratch off tickets or a Sneaky Pete book to help pay the mortgage.

Yes, there are limits on what the defense can do to get turnovers.

I think of defenses that played against the Cowboys with Weed at QB, especially early in those games. The chance for an INT was very low because Weed was super conservative with the ball. I think the Cowboys defense has encounter conservative offenses because teams knew they were not in a shootout against the Cowboys offense.

The funny thing about articles like this is that it still all comes down to not having Romo and Dez. Regardless of what Garrett does or doesn't do, the probability is that the Cowboys would have a winning record with Romo/Dez and would have losing record without them.

What is interesting that the article references is how the games come down to a few specific plays. To me it's all about 3rd/4th down conversions and plays with gains of over about 12 yards. For instance in the Saints game, the Cowboys defense had just 11 of what I call critical failed plays. If they could have to prevented a couple of those in a close game, they likely win.

It's more of a per season strategy than a per game strategy. I think it has generally worked for Marinelli in the past when you look at entire seasons; however, you obviously can't depend on getting turnovers in any 1 specific game as a strategy.
