The NFC East played, collectively, the worst defense in the NFL last season.
- The Cowboys ranked 17th in defense but tied a league-record low with their 11 takeaways and also finished 25th in sacks. The Commanders finished 28th in defense, the Eagles 30th and the Giants 32nd.
The Denver Broncos reminded us last February that defense can still win championships, and the Giants were the only team in the East to make a concerted effort this offseason to fix what ailed them on that side of the ball a year ago. New York's new-look defense will get its first exposure Sunday in the season opener against the Cowboys.
The Giants ranked last in the NFL in pass defense and 30th in sacks with just 23. The Saints slapped 52 points on the G-Men, the Panthers put up 38 and the Eagles 35. New York finished 30th in the NFL in points allowed with 442.
So the Giants spent $193.7 million to lure three starters away in free agency -- end Olivier Vernon, tackle Damon Harrison and cornerback Janoris Jenkins. A $105.3 million chunk of that was guaranteed money. New York also used three of its top four draft picks on defensive players, selecting cornerback Eli Apple of Ohio State in the first round, safety Darian Thompson of Boise State in the third round and linebacker B.J. Goodson of Clemson in the fourth round.
Harrison was an inside force with the Jets last season, helping the other New York team finish second in the NFL in run defense. Vernon was the top pass rusher available in free agency with 7 1/2 sacks for the Dolphins. Jenkins gives the Giants a playmaker at the back end of their defense. He intercepted 10 passes in four seasons with the Rams and returned five of them for touchdowns.
