News: DMN: Scouting the Giants: New York's new-look defense to debut against Cowboys after near...

The NFC East played, collectively, the worst defense in the NFL last season.
  1. The Cowboys ranked 17th in defense but tied a league-record low with their 11 takeaways and also finished 25th in sacks. The Commanders finished 28th in defense, the Eagles 30th and the Giants 32nd.

The Denver Broncos reminded us last February that defense can still win championships, and the Giants were the only team in the East to make a concerted effort this offseason to fix what ailed them on that side of the ball a year ago. New York's new-look defense will get its first exposure Sunday in the season opener against the Cowboys.

The Giants ranked last in the NFL in pass defense and 30th in sacks with just 23. The Saints slapped 52 points on the G-Men, the Panthers put up 38 and the Eagles 35. New York finished 30th in the NFL in points allowed with 442.

So the Giants spent $193.7 million to lure three starters away in free agency -- end Olivier Vernon, tackle Damon Harrison and cornerback Janoris Jenkins. A $105.3 million chunk of that was guaranteed money. New York also used three of its top four draft picks on defensive players, selecting cornerback Eli Apple of Ohio State in the first round, safety Darian Thompson of Boise State in the third round and linebacker B.J. Goodson of Clemson in the fourth round.

Harrison was an inside force with the Jets last season, helping the other New York team finish second in the NFL in run defense. Vernon was the top pass rusher available in free agency with 7 1/2 sacks for the Dolphins. Jenkins gives the Giants a playmaker at the back end of their defense. He intercepted 10 passes in four seasons with the Rams and returned five of them for touchdowns.

Good luck getting them all on the same page.

The Defense will be showcased this year.
As the weak O line of the Giants will not keep the ball away from the opponents.

I think the same way the Cowboys Offense will protect the defense by keeping them off the field, the Giants D could protect their offense by giving them more opportunities.

Amazing how stats tell the tale we had the top defense out of the NFC east last year BUT listen to any enemy fan they say we have no defense SMH. I kept telling my friends the D isn't as bad as you think we were in most games last year. If we had a Offense that could have gotten a first down or put some points up things would have looked awfully different. We do need to improve in turnovers but I think moving jones to safety and Scandrick back will help their. Sacks I don't care about as much as pressure but that is me I guess, I think we will see much more pressure straight up the middle which will also help our turnover numbers. Very excited for the year lets go boys

Only guy who really worries me is Vernon. He has succeeded pretty well against Tyron Smith in the past.

History generally shows that big money free agents rarely play up to their contract, and teams that spend big in free agency eventually hit a cap crunch that guts their team. (The Commanders used to always be pre-season champs that became regular season chumps. They appear to have learned.) The Giants are not a team that was a player or two from competing for a championship. I see them 3rd in the division with Philly being last.

Before Romo went down I had as a slight favorites followed by the Giants and Skins then the Eagles.

My reason for NYG is they scored points last year but collapsed defensively. They will be midpack or nearly so this year.

Not as ballyhooed as the Dream Team but it will take time for them to gel as a D. It's good they'll still be getting acclimated but they are in the hands of a very good DC.

While their D is a concern, I am more concerned by ours being able to stop them and keep them form putting additional pressure on our QB to score. The Giants known weakness is their OL. Our know weakness is our DL. If we can't get pressure against this OL, this will be our Achilles Tendon as we will face better OLs than this one.

Manning likes to get the ball out fast, our secondary and LBs are going to get tested right out of the gate. Our DL will need time to get to him. I think too much time.

Their linebackers are suspect, and against the running backs and tight ends of Dallas, things could be loosened up.

I'm curious to see what effect the new coaching staff has on the giants

Coughlin had some pretty edgy/tough teams over his tenure that seemed to reflect his personality (or perhaps they were reacting to it)

That's how I see it right now, too. Though that could easily change. The NFCE is up in the air, with only PHI I think a clear cut below the other three teams right now.

For the Giants, they had a long way to go on defense. Plus the loss of Coughlin was pretty significant. It remains to be seen if McAdoo can handle the job he's got.

Hopefully Tony is in the film room with Dakota helping him decipher Steve Spags defense since he has played it so many times. Also hope Dakota is able to pick up the tendencies quickly because they will be blitzing non-stop.

Large investments in older/proven players, develops until injury clouds the complete picture.

Their linebackers may be protected enough by their defensive line and base ability covered up by a quality secondary. But there is a weakness right there, that the Dallas offensive line and running back stable can work to death.

Personally i believe our O Line is up for the task. Lets not forget, the real reason they made all those moves on the DL was to counteract Romo having 15 seconds in the pocket to make his reads and dissect their defense.

What also helps Eli is the speed of their WR's. We need to get that extra second so that the pass rush, which we have no idea about, to get pressure.
We can't match that speed, but this is where Byron Jones must make his impact too.
There will be growing pains.
