Kevin Sherrington, sports columnist for SportsDayDFW.com and The Dallas Morning News, answered questions about the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and local college sports in a chat Wednesday. Here are some of the highlights:

Question: It appears that WR Terrance Williams has upped and gone away. Will he recover when Dez returns?

Kevin Sherrington: I believe what you've seen with Terrance Williams is what you're going to get. He can make plays occasionally, but it doesn't appear he's going to be a consistent target. It's one of the shortcomings of this team. Not much quality depth at WR. Consider this: The biggest play of the season was a 67-yard catch by Brice Butler, who wasn't even on the roster when the season started. And they miss him, too.

problem with the comparison is that with the exception of the last half of 2009 Spencer never really was a complement to Ware. His one top year came when Ware was injured.

I disagree. Spencer was always effective. You pay too much attention to stats to see that.

That said, I think Hardy and Gregory are far better pass rusher than Ware / Spencer. On the other hand, Ware / Spencer are far better run stoppers than Hardy / Gregory will ever be.

I think our minimum expectation for Lawrence is Spencer. I think most of expect Hardy and Gregory to be something special. And mean

I think they could be better. Ware and Hardy are around similar levels, but I have a feeling Gregory will be much better than Spencer.

Hardy is as good of a run stopper as he is a pass rusher...

Unless of course, you were always wrong about Anthony Spencer.

You were.

no, spencer was total meh. Ware was just that good. And Ware better than these two combined but im hoping Hardy and Gregory are a better duo. Slow Hardy, Gregory makes you pay, slow Gregory and Hardy gets you.

Greg Hardy is a better pass rusher than Spencer could ever dream of being, and I would hope that the expectations for Gregory are higher than that as well.

At his best, Ware was as good at getting to the quarterback as Hardy, but when he got there, he didn't punish the QB like Hardy does. He mentioned it in a recent quote and it's worth mentioning. There's something to inflicting pain on an opposing quarterback, as long as it's not with the Internet to injure and within the rules. Intimidation plays a role when it comes to defensive players.

My bar for these players is set higher than Ware/Spencer.

Ware was a better pass rusher than Hardy and there is plenty of evidence of it with a quick search of the intent. The stats are there. He was the most prolific pass rusher not named Reggie White in the history of the league.

Hardy is in his prime right now, while Ware is past his. I think Hardy's arrow is still pointing upwards, and, like Ware, I think he's in the perfect situation to go and get the quarterback. My comments are no slight towards Ware. He's an all-time great, but I'm excited to see what Hardy can bring to this defense.

One major difference to me is that both Gregory and Hardy can get there, and when they do, they inflict punishment when they tackle.

Anthony seemed to produce great pressure with few hits, and Ware would kind of wrap up the QB and fall with him.
