I think we can have one of the deepest DL rotations as we have had in many years.
But we still need them to step up and get a consistent pass rush. That is the unknown part. But I do think the talent level is there to be better than before.

I agree. But we need at least two playmakers there.

I think this article is spot on, the very first line anyway. Cowboys are DESPERATE for breakout player on DL, so the PR machine is in full force.

Would love for Russell to breakout, but these kind of expectations for 2nd year player picked on 3rd day is not just unfair but unrealistic. Let's at least wait until one of the useless preseason games before anointing anyone.

How great would it be if Ryan Russell were to make an unexpected impact as a left side DE in camp this year? Right now, at this juncture, it likely seems too good to be true for many of us. Most years, one or two players have stepped up to make their presence felt. Let's hope his time is now.

The flip side is that he is 6' 5" and 270 pounds, with long arms and athleticism..... he sounds good, so maybe him getting a shot
is a good thing.

I don't believe it... I read on the zone he was going to be cut because he hardly saw the field last year, even though he was placed on IR smh

Anyways I went back and watched his game vs Zack Martins Notre Dame and he looked better than any DE picked in the 2nd round of this years draft.

Russell has some talent to play a base LDE, and kick inside on occasion to rush the passer. Not as quick twitch as the defense calls for, and I think he needs to play with some more intensity down in and out. He can definitely be a part of a rotation, but he's not a guy that you want at the front of it.

Cowboys fans are desperate to find any possible breakout player on the defensive line, a thin position group on a defense that ranked as one of the worst in the NFL last season.

I agree with the first part of the sentence, we are desperate for someone to emerge on the DL.

I disagree with the second part.

The DL depth is easily the best we've since since returning to the 4-3.

Yep and we need a couple of surprises to step up.

I've penciled in Tyrone Crawford as one.

Maple leaf managed 5 sacks last season playing with one arm, a lot of players would've opted to go on IR instead and protect their futures. I'm looking forward to seeing Crawford playing with both arms again.

Randy Gregory has the talent to bust out in year two provided he keeps testing clean and doesn't suffer another suspension.

We could keep mining for gold or finally break down and invest in gold. Need to spend a 1st round pick (or two) and some smart free agent money on some D Line talent. I'm as big a Gregory fan as anyone but there's a reason why we were able to get him late 2nd.

I hope for the best for Randy Gregory but am not counting on him to produce this year or any years. I think there's a better chance we'll see more out of Jaylon Smith this year and in the future than Gregory. I hope I'm wrong but not counting on the kid. He didn't do much last year when he was on the field and couple that with his off the field illness makes me think we busted on that pick.

Again, hope I'm wrong and you're right.

I expect all of us carry concerns regarding Randy Gregory remaining eligible to play once his four game suspension is over.

It's most likely an issue that will never go away as long as Gregory plays professional football. If Gregory ever enters stage 3 of the NFL's substance abuse program, he will get tested for the rest of his career. He's in stage 2 now. If Gregory stays clean for 24 months or 2 full NFL seasons, whichever is shorter, from his last failed test, he can get out of the program.

It is also possible to get out of stage 2 early (12 or 18 months) if the medical director and advisor feel it's warranted. Besides the obvious, no failed tests, the player must be compliant with the program and show clinical progress.

That's a dark cloud looming over #94.

Nonetheless, Gregory is the best edge rusher on the roster.

He just needs to be on the filed.

We need Ryan Russell to step up this season and he needs it, too.

He might eek out another year here without it, but would almost certainly be jettisoned following the season if not during it.

Russell's getting some good reports, I hope he's ready.

Interestingly, if you listen to the BTB podcast @dogunwo posted the other day, they discussed a different player that the coaches are just raving about at LDE.

David Irving.

There's a lot of young blood on the DL.

Russell, Irving, Randy Gregory, Benson Mayowa, Charles Tapper, Maliek Collins, Rodney Coe, Mike Mcadoo.

A couple of them need to rise. That isn't asking for too much.
