Bob Sturm: If DeMarco Murray, Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch all are on the market, here’s my choice

Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray. (G.J. McCarthy/The Dallas Morning News)

The Ticket’s Bob Sturm answered questions in a chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: I grew up a Cowboys’ fan and very few people enjoyed it like I did. However, after many years of mediocrity has driven me away from the Cowboys. I still watch the sport, but have become more interested in the other 3 sports more because it’s fun to watch. I try getting back to the Cowboys, but it’s not the same. Are you finding more people like me over the past few years?

Bob Sturm: Sure. But, I assume that is somewhat results oriented. Since the Cowboys last won a title, the Stars and Mavs have both been to the Finals twice and won a world title, and the Rangers have been to the World Series twice. A Super Bowl in this generation would be insane for this city.

Question: Why are the Cowboy’s so historically bad at executing the screen pass? I’ve seen improvement this year, mainly due to the line and their quickness, I believe. I love the 2nd and 3rd level blocks put out by Z.

Bob Sturm: I think you hit on it right there. You need the proper athletes on your OL to have any ability on the screens. You also need a RB who has the timing. They finally have the combo and I plan on writing this up next week.

Question: Bob, say they sign McClain next year, who do you put at the mike, him or Lee?

Bob Sturm: I experiment. But the Mike and Will in this defense are not that different. They really aren’t. Some differences, that might encourage me to roll with 55 at Mike and 52 at Will, but I am open to try things at camp.

Question: Prioritize the following defensive players in terms of the most important to keep: R. McClain, Melton, Durant, Carter, Spencer, Hayden and Moore?

Bob Sturm: McClain – Melton – Durant, the rest are not worth getting carried away with.

Can't say I disagree with that answer. Next in line I would put Spencer or Moore. Carter doesn't seem to be a valued player and I still don't care for Hayden.

Yeh, why Hayden and Moore make that fan's list I have no idea.

Is anyone watching Moore and saying "I want more of that"?

Is anyone watching Hayden and saying "Let's make Hayden while the sun shines"?

I prefer Dallas to draft a running back next year. This results in saving money.

Dallas' oline would make an average running back look good.

Murray is a full three years younger. All things being equal, give me Murray any day of the week. WAY more mileage left on those tires. Oh, and this idea that we can get Peterson for much, much less than Murray is silly.
Who cares about 3 years younger. None of these guys are going to get much more than a 3 year deal anyways.

I'd absolutely take Murray, all things considered. Age/Price/Performance? I'm going Demarco. He is prime right now.

This isn't about who is the overall better back.

That makes zero sense. Why does the length of the contract have anything to do with their ages? If they sign one-year, three-year, or ten-year contracts, Peterson is always going to be three years older. Sorry, but I'll take Murray when he's 27 to 29 years old vs. Peterson when he's 30 to 32 years old.

moore is not a starter. but he is a solid depth guy who can give you good reps. since we signed him off the street and even after cutting him , signed him back i don't think signing him next year is going to be hard or expensive. you could do much worse with you 4th or 5th cb

What's the difference between 28 year old Murray and 31 year old Peterson? It's not like Murray is still trending up and developing.

And not for nothing, but guys who touch the ball as much as Murray tend to completely fall off a cliff the next season.

Not all do, Murray is in good condition and while some have others have not.

Lynch just scored four TD's against the G men, give me him behind Dallas' line.

Edit. DeMarco 7 TD's 5 Fumbles, Beast Mode 12 TD's 1 fumble.

Why is it silly? You already stated your case for wanting Murray; between that and the stigma around Peterson, he should come cheaper.

I remember reading stories about how much in shape his joints were when James Andrews did his ACL repair. Then he proceeded to come back in record time. I just think he's one of those few, rare freak athletes who could produce at the same level for the next 3 or 4 years. Add to the fact that Demarco is no way the kind of back he is then I take AP all day!

Exactly one of the five backs who has had 400 carriers - Eric Dickerson - didn't seen an immediate dropoff in production.

Murray might not hit 400 carries, but he'll be well over 400 touches, plus pass blocking which takes more of a toll than I think people realize.

I think that what's "silly" is thinking that Peterson will still command huge money once he's released.

Murray is the league's leading rusher, entering the prime of his career. His stock will never be higher.

Peterson is suffering from a terribly damaged reputation and trying to get back in the league. And he's going to be released this season or next. His stock has never been lower.

I think that a shrewd businessman willing to gamble could use this situation to their advantage.

Offer the same deal to both backs and the first one who takes it, gets it. Pit both camps against the other and you end up with a great running back on your terms.

The Steelers did a similar thing two years ago with Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown and now look like geniuses.

This post is one of the main reasons why I take AP. We'll be buying low. There's so much short term memory in this league that we're actually putting Murray on the same Pedestal as AP and buying high on Lynch after his 4 TD game.

Have people really forgotten how dynamic AP his? He can catch out of the backfield. He can protect. He's beast mode up the middle like Lynch. But most of all, all those wide open runs Murray has had this year, only to run into a defender or go down etc. Think of with this O-line, having to hold your breath for a long TD run each time that happens.

This guy had a 2000 yard season pretty much playing 16 games seeing the same number of guys in the box as Murray saw in the AZ game. We are talking about a special, once in a lifetime back, here folks.

Have people really forgotten this:
