In Jaws, a character named Ben Gardner has an unfortunate run-in with the titular shark but the real-life defensive end with that name is faring better.

Gardner earned conference honors after each of his final three seasons at Stanford, performances that helped him get drafted by the Cowboys this year. Gardner was a seventh-round pick, which may be near the end of the draft but is still better than being shark bait.http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=profootballtalk.nbcsports.com&blog=&post=2259953&subd=nbcprofootballtalk&ref=&feed=1

He should be able to eat right at least... so he doesn't have to starve while trying to compete for a spot on the team. right?

(Mike starts looking up the cost of Super Bowl tickets...)

good pick up in the draft he had 4.5 sacks last year, the year before he had 7.5. and had an excellent combine, I think Stanford also plays a 3-4 so that is pretty impressive

I have read many opinions about this guy and there are some high hopes that he will be a draft steal. I took last year off from keeping up with draft prospects, do why did this guy drop? Is the hype surrounding him just hope ?

I guess with the late draft, the picks will be signing rather quickly.

No. With the new CBA and the way rookie salaries are slotted, these guys could all be signed by the end of the rookie minicamp. lol

People talk about football players making the big dollars when they get their 2nd contract.

I don't see anything wrong with getting $2.2M as a 7th rounder.

True, though that's the maximum value he could get as it's not guaranteed.

"wrong?" No. But I can tell you that 22 year old me wasn't making 500k/year.

Neither is 30 year old me for that matter.

The older I get, the more I understand how these guys don't have money though. No way I would have been able to handle that.

Cowboys sign seventh-round picks Gardner and Smith

Another seventh-round pick, Texas Tech linebacker Will Smith, followed in agreeing to terms, according to a source.
