This year’s Cowboys training camp marked the first time I was able to take in the entire month-long session. I was out there for only the first two weeks last year, so there’s obviously much more to gather with twice as much time.
Thinking back on the previous month, I came up with 20 things that stood out about this year’s Cowboys team.
Here’s my list, in no particular order.
2.) Speaking of Romo, there was a lot of Coach Romo on display over the last month. When he wasn’t taking reps, the Pro Bowl QB was often talking to young receivers and tight ends. Lucky Whitehead and Geoff Swaim seemed to be a couple of his favorites. It’s probably something he’s been doing for a while, I just really noticed it this year. It obviously speaks volumes to those young players when Romo is going out of his way to explain what they should be doing on certain plays, against certain coverages.
3.) Lucky Whitehead is the closest thing the Cowboys have to Dwayne Harris. They like Cole Beasley returning punts, but if they want to keep Beasley out of harm’s way, Whitehead is the guy. As long as he takes care of the ball, he’ll make people miss. He just seems to have that special game-breaking shake and acceleration to him. If he can hang onto the ball, he’s got the potential to be an excellent returner.
4.) What do the Cowboys have behind Romo at QB? We haven’t seen much from Brandon Weeden in the preseason and Dustin Vaughan has battled inconsistency. Rookie Jameill Showers has looked good during his time late in the first two preseason games, but I still wonder if they’d entertain keeping him over Vaughan. Maybe they don’t keep either and only Romo and Weeden make the 53. A lot to still be determined there over these final two preseason games.
