INDIANAPOLIS — Josh Brent is in the process of serving a 180-day jail sentence after being convicted of intoxication manslaughter for his role in the 2012 drunken-driving accident that killed Cowboys practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown Jr.

But would the Cowboys be open to bringing back the nose tackle?

“I’ll weigh in on that when the time comes,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday. “He’s retired and he has got a lot of work ahead of him. But obviously we hope he does all of the right things. And if he does, at some point, and he feels like he has got his priorities in the right order and he wants to play football, then, we’ll discuss that.”

Brent, who walked away from his NFL career in July 2013 with his trial looming, would have to apply for reinstatement with the league. Any request has to be reviewed and approved by the NFL. If he were allowed to return to pro football, he could still be suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for his conviction under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

That's funny.

Not only would they, they are COUNTING on Brent to come back. They didn't give him all this "support" because they want him to become a fine burger flipper. Jerry is a drunk himself, so there's nothing here that will dissuade him from bringing back Brent at all.

What's it going to be then, eh?

The appropriate response is "he is retired, he is not part of our football team or our immediate plans for this upcoming season, next question".

This kind of wishy washy reply is annoying.

It's time the team moved on from him and time from him to move on from the team.

If he wants a fresh start, it should be somewhere else.

Probably. Even though Garrett runs a "tight ship" and holds players to a high standards! Lol. If I am a young player on this team and I say to myself, they want a guy back that has multiple DUI's with the last one killing a teammate, and they were more than happy to keep Ratliff after his DUI shortly after browns death....why would I ever be worried about getting in trouble for driving drunk? ?? No rules, no discipline, no accountability. It would be a disgrace to bring that POS back to this team.

You would think that, but the way the team appears to have been aware of his situation suggests we just can't quit him. Why I have no idea.

Usually when this kind of thing happens you do not hear about it again, plus the question is not even asked. There probably is a reason people keep asking team officials about him.

I don't agree. You can't make people be responsible nor can you keep people entirely out of trouble. Stuff happens particularly DUI. You can go over the limit easily. You can get in a car to drive and not be over then but in ten minutes be over it. I think you're being too harsh. That may not apply to Ratliff and it certainly doesn't to Brent but it serves as an example of how easy it is to get dinged for that offense.

RE: Brent; I don't know anyone that knows the guy say he's anything other than a good guy and teammate. He made an incredibly stupid decision that killed his best friend that's for sure. For some that appears to be a 'death sentence' and he's branded and tainted for life. If he was a bad character then that'd be it for me as well as far as playing on my team. But if he can be rehabilitated esp if that's what that mother wants then he gets a shot. If he's not training then he may not be able to come back. Sometimes you don't get what you lost back.

This.

They reported on one of the DFW local sports radios shows that Brent works for the Jerry in some Cowboys (apparel?) warehouse. Why would he support him if they did not want him back under the right circumstances?

These guys have the privilege of playing a game for millions of dollars if they can make better decisions they don't deserve the privilege. Brent has had at least one DUI prior and was more than double the limit when he crashed. One DUI can happen. Multiple DUI's tell me you just don't give a crap. Screw him.

Not for nothing, but he went to work at Home Depot. The burger flipper stereotype doesn't work for him.

That said, I believe you are right, they are counting on him coming back.

So Brent would not be a distraction, but Michael Sam would?
VP Stephen Jones on Michael Sam: ‘If he’s at the right time in the right place, we’d certainly look at taking him’

INDIANAPOLIS — Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones elaborated Tuesday on his earlier response that the team would be open to drafting Michael Sam. Jones said he believes Dallas’ veteran players would be receptive to Sam and “someone’s preference in terms of any part of their personal life” wouldn’t threaten the dynamic in the locker room.

“I think at the end of the day our guys want to win,” he said.

Don't worry Micheal Sam and Johnny Football are gonna be Cowboys....book it!!!!!

Watch the world burn offseason:

1) Manziel; 2) Michael Sam; draft a tight end in the third round, bring back Brent; install Matt Johnson as starting strong safety.

I just said the DUI being an easy offense to commit didn't apply to him.

Everyone is welcome to their opinion. I just don't see why so many who aren't involved with this person or are so emotional about it.

Of course the Cowboys would entertain bringing Brent back. That's been the plan all along if the guy can get it together. And in my opinion, it'd be huge if he's still able to play. But it's been a long, long time off the field, with a lot of emotional distraction going on, and he'd be coming back to a very different level of scrutiny if and when he makes it. There's little guarantee he'll be able to give us anything at all. Still, I hope he makes it.

Yup, they would.
He is under contract for peanuts (once he un-retires) and plays a difficult to fill position more than adequately.
Teams like the Patriots have made the same call previously.

This position is a hot button for people and understandably so; but from a team standpoint the decision is quite easy.
Stand by the guy and get value out of him in a value for asset business.

You really think that someone looking at Brent's situation is going to take away from it that DUI is a good idea? I think Jerry Brown overcomes that type of flippancy.

Sounds a little cold but it is a business. I do think the Cowboys are wanting to help the guy and I consider that not just classy but the right thing to do. If he does well both he and the team benefit on and off the field. If he doesn't do well few people will blame the Cowboys IMO. All you can do is offer a hand up.
