Roy Williams/Tony Romo workouts might not be too productive

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
The news that Tony Romo was throwing passes to Roy Williams during unofficial voluntary workouts at Valley Ranch gave folks reason to believe the QB and coachable WR could get on the same page.

Now comes news that Williams is extremely limited in the workouts due to the foot injury that bothered him all last season.

"I'm pretty healthy. I'm running around with the other guys," Williams told the team's official Web site. "I haven't cut yet. I'm just running straight. I'm kind of scared a little bit to cut."

How productive can the workouts be if Williams can't run any routes other than gos? (Williams might say that he doesn't run any other routes anyway.)

Romo and Williams might be establishing rapport and chemistry during these workouts. But the fact that Williams isn't running routes -- and Troy Aikman is among the many who have criticized his sloppy route running -- seems like it ought to be a pretty big concern.

Williams, however, sure doesn't sound worried. He thinks it's funny that folks doubt his ability to be the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver.

"I'm not sure why I can't do it all of a sudden," Williams told the team site. "I [was the No. 1 receiver] at Texas. I did it in Detroit, although no really saw me all the time. And now I'm here in Dallas. Every time I've come to Texas Stadium, I came in there and had big games. So now I'm not sure all of a sudden why people don't think I can do it here with the Cowboys. I know what I can do.

"It's just funny to me. I look forward to hearing people say 'I'm sorry for saying that he couldn't.' That's what I want to hear."

Well, he can still get used to Tony's zip on the ball, as well as get used to seeing passes come from Tony. It doesn't sound like much, but its still useful. A little work is better than no work at all.

Well, he better start doing some cutting right away! I mean today!

He has a game this Sunday...I think? Or does training camp come and pre-season come first? I always get those mixed up?

I'd rather have him healed up properly than try to do too much too soon.

There are other ways to work out and stay in shape than running routes.

How does running 10 yards, and watching the ball sail to someone else or over your head, hurt a foot?

to be honest i'd rather Romo be working with Austin & the other WR's and let Roy get fit and rest his foot some more. This does nobody any good IMO.

It's early to be concerned, but it's not a smart decision by Jerry to think they don't need another WR.

Both Roy and Austin's history says they will be injured next season. Hopefully not at the same time.

I bet they are not going full out during these practices but they might be learning the playbook and where to go on a certain play, what to look out for, and small stuff like that.

Williams has not spent alot of "free" time wiith Romo and the other recievers (which I read were attending)...so I think it does do good because they can talk about certain plays and what certain guys might do during a called play.

It's not like anyone is getting hit...just a learning, feeling out process for the coming training camp. IMO.

I got no problem with Roy taking it easy rehabbing from is injury, the last thing we need is for him to push it too much and hurt himself again while rehabbing.

Felix Jones ring a bell guys???

Some real data beyond the feel good "practicing with Tony" stuff. This guy has been injury prone, and needs to justify the crazy contract (draft losses) that Jerry signed with him.

He looked like a nice addition to TO during our "playoff" run last year, but has a lot to prove as our #1 receiver this season.

i like roy williams desire attitude to get out there and practice

but i dont want him to reinjure himself,

reason why i posted the article, i thought after 3 months that that type of injury would already be healed up,

so thats why i was worried alittle and letting you zoners see what i ran across in the article

Roy, if you prove to me that you can be a formidable #1 WR, I'll be the first to say it. Please, make me say it. ;)

If Aikman knew about his lisfranc injury, I doubt he would criticized his sloppy route running so much. Nobody should expect sharp routes with that injury. He really shouldn't have been playing.

I'm the eternal optimist. I wake up Christmas morning to a pile of horse ****, you better believe I'll be digging for that pony.

And I was so pumped over the trade for Williams.

Right now, I'm really concerned now. I don't like what I've seen or heard from Williams from day one.

I'm hoping for the best.

How long does this type of injury take to heal?

About 5-7 months?

I thought that rest was the best remedy for it. Anyway, I'm sure the training staff is monitoring the injury closely.
