I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the support of Patrick Watkins after the game tonight. He played well in the most meaningless preseason game against predominantly backups.

But please, DO NOT forget that this is the EXACT kind of player that has and will cost us those close games we ALWAYS always complain about. The kind of game we lose because of a brutal mistake that takes points off the board or allows a crucial first down. The kind of mistake we always hold our breath on, yet a team like the Patriots never seem to make.

This isn't personal, this is all business but when we ***** and moan about stupid penalties in the kicking game and coverage mistakes in the secondary we are talking about him.

I feel we've done a good job in changing the culture of the team but the penalty/mistake prone "stake in the heart" dagger still lingers and it lives with a player like Patrick Watkins.

or maybe he rose to the occasion and made plays that contributed to a 14 point comeback....like weve been wanting our players to do .....i guess its all how you see things.....

I can't believe it either ... his fourth year in the league ...

Unless Campo imparted some incredible coaching .... but Campo was here last year ...

Unless he just had a kid, and got serious all of a sudden.

Watkins is the chief cameraman for MartyBTV I think ... so he has a future in photojournalism at least ..

Watkins seems to make the worst and least intelligent plays at exactly the worst times. That's what bugs me about him. Hopefully, he has matured a bit..but yeah, I'm not buying into what I saw last night.

OK-then... Who's better than Watkins at this point as a reserve safety and on special teams?

Good point but might I add who is better as the 53rd player currently

I dont see who the other player who will beat out Watkins is. Everyone is in a cutting mood right now, but who exactly do you think should replace the person you want cut. It's not like we will be able to pick up someone elses scrub and they will be better than Watkins.

If we get injuries and someone else plays better OR we draft someone better next year that's fine, but right now Watkins has to be a safe roster spot/backup starter/special teamer.

Morning MW, I'm not saying anyone is necessarily better...I'm saying, I think he's a guy who is prone to making bad plays.

Agreed.

The personal fouls get to be old.

But the guy makes plays.

If one of the new guys had stepped up to do something... anything... I say cut'em.

But they didn't. Even the guy out 6-weeks, Hamlin, didn't contribute much.

No one beat the guy--Watkins, out.

Morning!

Hopefully the pain isn't too severe today.

I dont have any illusions about him becoming a pro bowl player, and probably never even an average starter.

But I do give him credit for having a good game last night. While it was ultimately "meaningless", in some ways it wasnt. Some guys on the fence solidified their release from this team, Watkins (and Octavian) both did the opposite and I think "won" spots on the roster.

As Phillips said, Watkins alone accounted for 17 pts (he saved the td on the GL). Thats a heckuva game.

What dumb mistakes has he made? He's been out of position once or twice, but every guy on this roster has. Got anything specific?

The problem is that there's such LITTLE talent at the bottom of the roster. There's no one jumping out at you that demands a roster spot. Ogletree already has his. And there are about 3-5 other spots left for guys like Watkins.

That's true.

Having so many of the draftees ending up on IR or the PUP list has changed the complexion of the bottom of the roster.

Or maybe, or maybe . . . abreee-ah, abreee-ah . . . maybe this was desperation, an anomaly. Yeah, a 14-point comeback in a meaningless game. Or maybe he was playing against uninspired backups. :laugh1:

Can he be consistent? That, porky, is the question.
