Valid question. I distinctly remember folks crying a river about how we missed and all three of those chumps are better than Tony.

Crow pie is on special tonight.

wouldn't mind giving quinn a try.

Ohhh... I bet you wouldn't.

The original question: "Do people still want Brady Quinn?"

I'd say just Brady's mom and McCordsville...

I won't jettison Romo, but I won't lie I would've drafted Cutler going into 2006 had I had the chance, hindsight I like Romo but i wouldn't have shied away from taking Cutler and trading one of them.

Let's put it this way. If we do ever get rid of Romo, I would never, ever consider "Hmm, wonder if Quinn is available?"

This is the only criticism I have of our discussions on here, sometimes. We don't make careful arguments, we don't follow arguments carefully, and so it all descends into the equivalent of shouting across a room at each other.

First. Brady Quinn was drafted in 2007. Last time I checked Romo was already starting in Dallas. So, it wasn't a question of taking Quinn or taking Romo. It was a question of taking Quinn to develop BEHIND Romo, as a possible FUTURE replacement for Romo, or taking someone else.

Second. The guy we took instead was Anthony Spencer.

So, the real question for this thread is:

Quinn or Spencer given the state of our team today?

Would you like Quinn behind Romo developing right now, or are you glad we took Spencer who plays LB for us right now?

And the answer to that question really depends on how much you value developing a backup QB for the future. (Danny White behind Roger for example)

The 90's Cowboys really didn't take that approach. It didn't hurt us in the 90's, but you could argue that that approach hurt us after Aikman retired, as it was a pretty good time between Aikman and Romo.

I'm not sure whether Quinn would be the right guy to succeed Romo anyway (he's 5 years younger), but I don't think it would have been a bad move at the time.

And in terms of Quinn in Cleveland, did you see Derek Anderson's huge improvement when he came in Sunday? 3 interceptions. That Browns team is a disaster right now NO MATTER who you have at QB.

As I put in another thread, I've never been more enthused about Romo than I am right now. I thought he played a great game Monday night and I'm excited about our possibilities this year.

The thought by a few in the media was Dallas should not offer Romo a big contract extension and instead should draft and develop Quinn. Romo had yet to play a full season for the Cowbosy yet Dallas did sign Romo to a new contract part way through the 2007 season. Had they not Romo may have left Dallas after the 2007 season and the Cowboys would now be using Quinn. It isn't about just Spencer. It is about Dallas having both Spencer and Romo over having just Quinn. No, brainer that Dallas is in better shape with the pair over Quinn.

I also can't remember what else Dallas got in the trade with Cleveland. Dallas traded down with the Browns, so they got more than just one pick in return.

I like this post. A good one in my opinion.

My only thing with drafting and developing QBs is this. You don't draft a QB in round 1 to sit behind a QB for years and years and years. Rogers in Greenbay is a exception, rather than the rule, simply because they no doubt figured Favre would retire with in a year or two given his age.

Romo isn't even 30 yet. To have drafted Quinn, to groom, would mean he could possibly be sitting there on the bench for 5 or more years. Heres what happens then. Either you get rid of your starter, Romo, early in order to go with Quinn or you spend that 4 years grooming him and then he hits FA and goes somewhere else to play, meanwhile you've now got to start over and hope that Romo doesn't get hurt, or retire, before you can spend a couple more seasons grooming the next guy.

I just can't see a team, or a teams fans, being patient enough to groom a 1st round QB for multiple years. At least not in Dallas.

water under the bridge once again. It does not matter now. And realistically it was too soon to draft a QB high. Now in a couple of years it might be a thought. Romo will be pushing 32 and it might be an idea to try and look for a second rd QB to start to develope for 2-3 years.

the Browns are a true disaster as Mangenius has been exposed for the joke that he is. I feel sorry for anyone there right now.

I'd be for Jerry signing him. Come December/January, he can make sure the bench is nice and warm when Tony Romo comes off the field :)

You might be right Joseephuss about the reasoning back then. Quite frankly I don't remember any more. I do think though that somewhere in the next 3 to 4 years we should draft someone to groom for the future.
