I agree and it makes me sick to even ponder it.

i only gave baseball 2 strikes before i was done. when millionaires argue over money, the basic sense of purpose is lost. you don't even know why you do it anymore. except for the money.

I don't think we'll see an uncapped year. There'll be a lockout first.

Agreed, I can't help but see the parallel to the NHL.

Perhaps you should read the particulars involved in the upcoming labor situation. Peter (Burger) King has an excellent article up on his MMQB.

An uncapped year is not what you think it is and is very restrictive to the top 8 NFL teams.

Read it here:

Yeah, I just read that article a minute ago. I can't believe how restrictive it would be for the top teams. It kind of makes you wonder why all these people are out there saying it is guys like Jones that want to opt out of the agreement. It would definitely hurt the Cowboys if it was conducted under those rules (well, assuming we were one of the top 8 teams in 2009 or 2010 or whenever).

What's an upcapped year?
Each year the NFL has a specific maximum dollar amount it can spend on players. In 2008 I think its about 127 million.

An uncapped year would allow a team in therory to spend as much as it wanted to or could.

My interpretation of that top 8 team restriction was a restriction on signing other teams FA's. It didnt seem to limit how much we can pay are own players.

I was never one who thought Jerry Jones would operate as a Steinbrenner if given the chance.
But winning does come first for Jerry.
He will not let his loaded team get raided if he can help it.
If the opportunity for an uncapped 2010 presents itself, I'm convinced Jerry will take full advantage of it to keep as many playwers as possible.

I understand an uncapped year...the original thread line says upcapped year.

Thought they were throwing something new out there.

The uncapped year of 2010 would not help us get new players= BUT it would surely help us keep our own.

The thing I've not heard mentioned much is: in the event of an uncapped year, is there any likelihood that it'll last any longer than one season? My guess is no, for some of the same reasons that the league went to a salary cap in the first place.

Which is my biggest fear. Jerry paying cash to people like a madman cause he's got an uncapped system and driving that payroll up to 200 or more million and then the next offseason the parties agreeing and saying "Oh, yeah, and btw next season the cap is 140 million so all you teams above that...gotta get under it."

Then you're left, one year later, having to cut tons and tons and tons of money off the cap just to get back to even.

I HATE the idea of there being an uncapped year cause unless it happens for several years, where you dont get yourself in trouble from one year to the next, it's going to comeback to bite some big spenders in the butt the very next year.
