That said, this guy is still the straw that stirs this drink.

Even when he's not having his best game due to illness.

Still giving up nearly 5 yards per rush. Jones ran for 7(?) first downs last night so that definitely skews the number in a 3 game sample. Barkley had that big run. Something to keep an eye on.

No doubt. Run defense remains this team’s kryptonite.

They haven't become the run stopping force yet but the pass rush is certainly off to a hot start like those old 70's d-lines.

I hope it continues because if they made the playoffs, defense travels well anywhere.

For the last two decades, maybe with a couple of exceptions in ‘06 and ‘09, the best part of any Cowboys team was the offense. And there’s no question that was by design. Three games into this long season, there’s no question the script has flipped. The defense is now easily the best side of the ball.

I will temper our thrills a little with the reminder that we’re just a tad over 1/6th of the way through the season. But still, the early returns on the D are impressive.

Let’s look at the proof in the stats through 3 games:
  • Points allowed- Ranked 4th, allowing 17.3 pts per game. Pretty salty. You win a ton of games with that stat. Especially playoff games if you can sustain it.
  • Total Yds/game- Ranked 9th allowing 312 yards per game.
  • Total Sacks- Ranked #1 with 13 sacks. Parsons has 4 and budding stud Dorance Armstrong has 3)
  • Passing Yds Allowed- Ranked 4th with 176 ypg. I’m sure that has a lot to do with pressure.
  • Rushing Yds Allowed- Ranked 23rd with 136 yds per game. The one area that still needs major improvement. Still allowing about 5 yds per rush.
  • Total TOs- Ranked #16 with just 1 int so far. Still very early.
Again, it’s early. Some of these numbers will change, but the thing that jumps out are the sacks. If this defense can sustain the pressure, we will be in a lot of games even when the offense can’t perform at a high level. Which may be quite often.

Do we have a “New Doomsday Defense”? Signs are pointing that direction.
Keep in mind that Parsons was playing sick last night which was effecting his play.
Otherwise last nights D would have been even better.
How about the reemergence of DLaw with 3 sacks last night ?

They stopped RB runs very well last night outside of the TD run from Barkley, but he is going to get his if he has enough attempts. The guy is a special talent. What hurt was the Daniel Jones jailbreak runs, but I honestly think DQ was fine with letting him do that. They simply were not going to let him beat us throwing and didn't leave a spy on Jones.

True but I think for the most part Dallas handled the NY run pretty well through out the game, one problem is offensively we never could put it all together earlier in the game so NY had no reason to get away from the run.

..lol...Bullet. You know better than to speculate so early. ;)

Lets see how they pan with Rams and so called NEW Philly?

Those will be Huge benchmarks for the D.

Don’t necessarily disagree. But what pieces would you add? Who specifically?

For a reincarnation of Doomsday, you need another stud at each level. Dominating DT that demands double teams, stuffs the run, and can after the QB as well. You need a MLB that diagnoses quickly, can fight through traffic, and lay the lumber when he arrives. Finally, you need a true shutdown corner that takes half the field away all by himself and allows coverages to be rotated elsewhere. We have a solid defense and they shut it down sometimes but they are still capable of giving up drives and points.

Wilson had 1 sack and multiple TFL as SS. Definitely hard to fault his play.

And not understanding your "deep disappointment" in Barr, he looks like the best LB not named Parsons to me.

As for Cox, some of the blame has to be on him for the lack of minutes. He may not even be 100% yet.

As I wrote, Barr had a good game against the Bengals, but he was not very good against the Bucs, and he missed a few tackles against the Giants, including the tackle that would have stopped Barkley for 3 yards instead of taking it to the house. Barr used to be great. He is not that anymore. By saying he is the best LB not named Parsons all that means is he is better than LVE, which is not saying much.

It actually says a lot.

Did you watch the vid?

Barr is still learning DQ's system and he is already the best LB vs run and rushing the passer not named Parsons.

His whiff on Barkley's big run notwithstanding, Barr had a better game than you're giving him credit for.

The front 7, which includes both Barr & LVE, was absolutely dominant vs Giants in first half. Giants adjusted in 2nd half but Cowboys got gashed on ground only when Parsons was on sidelines.

Our defense has been very good so far but no way am I going to compare this defense with a couple of defenses that had Randy White, Ed too tall Jones, Bob Lily, Harvey Martin, Chuck Howley, Lee Roy Jordan and Mel Renfro. Those defenses helped us win two Super Bowl championships. Tap the brakes!

The penalties that keep happening when the defense gets a stop that gives the offense a new set of downs and keeps the defense on the field after they did their job are killers. Those are the ones that will cost you wins in the playoffs. For some reason those aren't getting cleaned up. Thats what happens when you draft morons with huge character questions because of their physical abilities, which the Jones loves to do. Gregory, the ex- right tackle Collins, etc are prime examples or great physical ability, but ten cent brains and very poor character. The red flags were there, they go get them anyway. Sam Williams is the next in an endless line of them. Hard to imagine Landry allowing these stupid costly penalties to go on. Oh, as far as Diggs -= all those INT's last year masked the fact that he is an average corner at best and can be beaten all day long. There have already been a few examples this year where if he just made a fist with his hand and knocked the ball away it would have been 4th down and ended the other teams drive. But he has to go for the glory and the INT and missed it and allowed a big catch that went for first downs and kept the drives going for the other teams. Just plain selfish and wanting to see themselves on ESPN highlights and not putting the team first - unfortunately he seems more the norm amongst todays selfish me-first players. All they want to do is run their mouths and brag how great they are- like the idiot rappers do, LOL. Morons imitating morons, LOL.

Dallas has a good defense. They are a quality DT away from being a great defense (IMO).

Its still fun having some confidence that the D can get a stop. For the past 10+ years I got a sinking feeling when the opponents get the ball late.

In the past we’d define Doomsday as top of the league or at least closer to the top.

But #9 ranked overall which is like first time we’ve been ranked in Top 10 since like Parcells first season in 2003 that carried Quincy to the playoffs is speaking volumes .

This is what we’ve always needed to coincide with the type of top 10 offenses we have had.

Definitely encouraging . And yea, it’s a top 10 defense that’s creating havoc and disruption at the LOS. It’s everything we’d have hoped for with those offenses we’ve had.

Only probably now is we don’t have that offense . Ranked 23rd in total offense . Wow!!

Not sure how we will keep up with the more prolific scoring offenses . We shall see.

Yep, a NT away from being Elite as we are still being gashed for rushing yards.
