Do you do any of these bets?

I looked up the odds of the Cowboys winning Super Bowl 49. They're 40 to 1. (http://www.footballlocks.com/nfl_futures_odds.shtml) Let's say you happen upon $1000 via an unexpected source. You inherit some money -- you find a valuable old coin you didn't know you had in your attic -- the IRS sends you an unexpected refund from a previous year, whatever. Do you bet that 1K on the Cowboys winning Super Bowl 49? If they win, your 1K becomes 40K.

I honestly probably wouldn't do it. I would probably invest it in gold or Swiss Francs or Euros. I know, I'm boring. But I'm curious if anyone would say what the hell and go for it. I've never actually done any Vegas gambling on the NFL. I don't even know when it's legal or when it's not, like if you actually have to be present in Vegas or whatever.

What about another team? The 49ers are listed at 8 to 1, so that 1K becomes only 8K, but their chances of winning it all are way better than ours. I would probably still buy the gold or the Swiss Francs.

You could go the other way. The Raiders and Jaguars odds are 150 to 1. That 1K would become a whopping 150K. You just happened upon that 1K. Take a Hail Mary for 150K?

Edit: Arg, type in the title. It won't let me change it. Supposed to be, "Do you do any of these bets?"

I wouldn't put $100 on Dallas winning it next season. You would have better luck going to Vegas and put it all on black(red) or play one hand of blackjack. Heck, play 1k on the pass line on a craps table. Any of the above is a lot smarter of a play than putting 1k on the Cowboys.

If I had to put it on a football team.........SF or Seattle, might as well put $500 on each of them and hedge your bets.

We have the same odds as the Houson Texans, who are picking #1 in the draft. Let that one settle in.

It seems logical to think SF has a better chance than the Cowboys but I think it's highly unlikely that SF gets to what would be the 4th straight NFC championship game in this day and age. Unless Seattle disbands the team I couldn't bet against em. I would invest in pork bellies and Wafflehouse.

We are going to be fortunate (if that's how you wanna look at it) to end up 8-8 for a 4th season.

Unfortunately, I suspect you're right, though I'd love it if the team proved us both wrong. My prediction is around 6 and 10 to 7 and 9, with 8 and 8 being overachieving. The only way I see us doing better is if Jerry and Jason somehow pull off one of the best drafts in team history and our D-line goes from being one of the worst to being far above average. Not very likely.

Btw, if I did bet, maybe I would go with the Raiders for $100. It's only a hundred bucks if I lose. If they somehow have a miracle season, that's $15,000. Now watch me not do that and then find this post after it actually happens and scream "shoulda done it!" I wish I could go back in time to 1981 and put every cent I can muster on the 49ers.

I've never found it to be a fruitful endeavor to discuss gambling with a man of the cloth...

LOL. I guess you didn't know that's just my handle. I'm not a reverend in real life.

Ah, well then- gambling on the Cowboys has to be an emotional and irrational maneuver.
No one in their right mind would bet on them to win unless it's the week after a loss, playing a below .500 team.

BUT- if I just came into a free thousand bucks...

I'd freakin' do it- because I love a good gamble and why not?
I'm a gamblin' man and that's livin' baby!

Let's hook up in Vegas and grab some babes and make some pit bosses our best friends and make the sad men cry!
Whoooooo!!

LOL. If I gambled on the Cowboys I'd end up praying so much that I'd probably end up a reverend.

You'd get 41 grand back as you win 40 plus get your original stake back. 40/1 seems a generous price to me. My work haven't priced up the superbowl yet but I was checking a couple of other bookies and they're 28/1 and 33/1

No. I do not give away my money unless it's to charity.

If I was otherwise financially squared away (I am) then yes, absolutely. Why not?
