Do You Kick or Receive?

When your playing an explosive offense like the Saints on the road, do you want to kick or receive?

You kick it, your risking the Saints scoring right away and getting that crowd fired up. You get the ball to start the second half though.

You recieve it, your risking a 3 and out with the Saints getting the ball at the start of the 3rd.

Pro's and cons for both sides really.

What would you do?

I always like getting the ball to start the 2nd half. If you are ahead you have a chance to go up by more points if trailing you have a chance to change the momentum in the 2nd half. I guess the way I see it games are won and lost in the 2nd half of games so may as well get the ball to start the 2nd half.

Always kick imo. Regardless of what kind of offense you are playing against it's more beneficial to have the ball to start the second half.

That's what I'm thinking as well.

I like having the ball to start the 2nd half. Given the way this offense performs on the opening possession ( 0tds this year) I'd definitely defer if we win the toss.

I would rather kickoff than receive. The offense in Dallas has been slow coming out of the gate for some time now,pre-Garrett even.

I also like the possibility of getting back to back posessions. If you can score to close out the 1st half and then follow it up with a score to open the 2nd half I think that can be a huge swing in a game.

I think I'd want to receive. If you could make some plays on offense you might build some momentum and be able to hang with the Saints. If they march down the field and score then I think that makes for a long day. Either choice has its upside and downside but I think getting the ball first and doing something with it has the potiential for a bigger upside.

On the road you receive. You force a three and out, then go on a 10 play TD drive. The crowd is KO'd.

Care to rephrase that?

3 and out when you receive?

Anyway, I think we should kick-off.

Football is still a game of field position, try to put the Saints 80 from your end-zone.

If we receive and can't move the ball, we could give the Saints the ball near midfield after a punt.

Plus we get the ball to start the 2nd half.

Also I don't think we have scored a TD on an opening drive this season.

since Dallas always starts slow on O, I say we should kick it off

and I always like getting the ball to start the 2nd half, so that works too

but my heart says we should pull a George Costanza and do the opposite

so receive it shall be

superpunk always wants to receive.
I'm more of a 'kicker' myself.

The Saints have had the most success when receiving the ball first. The Saints won the flip the first six games and received, scoring on each of the drives. Also, Greg Williams has been making such good halftime adjustments that the second half first possession by the opponent has usually been for naught.

So, I a long about way, I would say it would be to Dallas' favor to take the ball if winning the flip.

Games not won in the 1st half. If Dallas get the ball 1st and score there is still 3 plus qrts left to play. OT give me the ball 1st but to start a game there is not a big advantage of getting the ball 1st.

I'll guarantee you that Payton will take it. He has all season long. Yes, the game is not won in the first half, but you can make an early statement.

Yes you can make an early statement but your not going to win the game off the opening drive regardless if you score or not. As I said at least getting the ball in the 2nd half allows you the chance to increase your lead or make up a deficit and I figure I would rather have a chance at more possession in the 2nd half of the game than the 1st half of the game.

I can understand that approach. But, confidence in your defense to shut down that second half drive would, and has consistently for the Saints this year, meant excellent field position. So basically, it is based upon confidence. Confidence in your offense to score on the opening possession and confidence in your defense to adjust at the half and shut down the opponents' opening drive.

Without that confidence the "extra" possession in the second half may make more sense.

Personally, my approach especially at home is to always play defense first.

Tom Landry always said the most important time of the game was the first 5 minutes of the third quarter.

Bill Parcells has always said the two most important drives of any game are the drives into and out of the half.

Lets play Defense and use the emotion of the crowd early and then get the ball in our hands when it is calm out of the half...

Wade phillps has the exact opposite philosophy and it makes me insane.
