Do you think we franchise Hamlin while trying to reach agreement with his agent?

reach an agreement with his agent during the Combine?

(I'm assuming, for now, that we are letting Flo test FA.)

At least that way we're covered in case it takes longer than February 28th to reach a long-term deal.

Opinions?

I think there is a fast approaching if not already passed deadline (its pre 2/29) for notifying players they'll be tagged.

Once the tag is applied there is also a window of when we can or cannot negotiate an alternative deal.

Point being, I'm not sure your scenario is allowed. I want to say if we tag someone that we can't replace the tag with a deal before sometime in July.

Someone will bring you the specifics I'm sure.

I was under the impression if we apply the tag, we have until tomorrow (Thursday).

If we apply the tag, we have until June or July (not exactly sure) to work out a longer-term contract, otherwise we can only do a 1 year contract.

I think Hamlin walks.

I'm not inclined to believe he would be benevolent enough to give the Cowboys a preferred shopper discount.

I believe the above (couple of posts I guess) answer is correct. You have till June or July to get a long term deal on a franchised player, beyond that they have to play for the 1 year tendered franchise offer till the following offseason. That would be similiar to how the Colts did Dwight Freeny last year, tagging him so that they could get a long term deal done. (Not sure when his deal was actually completed last offseason)

I also disagee with Zimmy Lives. Hamlin should be locked up long term and I believe Jerry will get that done.

I just hope we franchise him by tomorrow just in case we don't get a long term deal done by the 28th of Feb.

I hope you are right BraveHeartFan. I would hate to lose Hamlin but I don't see how Jerry can justify giving him a big contract when he still has to consider future negotiations with Ware and Newman -- two star players who will demand huge contracts -- and an uncertain cap system.

I think Dallas will be able to reach a deal with Hamlin without resorting to using the franchise tag.
