Do you think Williams beats out Austin before the end of the year?

Good point

My point was Robinson is a bad example of what you were trying to convey. Nicks has a better team around him so he is able to thrive better than Robinson has since the teams he was on, up until he came to Dallas, were not as good.

Answer me this... who is better: Nicks or Robinson? Don't worry about stats or what they've accomplished. Which player looks to be the better of the two?

That's the only point I'm getting at. Prototypical attributes aren't everything. Are they helpful? Sure. But they are far from the only thing of importance.

No, but I think Austin sees more limited minutes since he's injury-prone and Williams can help fill the void.

Reduce his snaps and he'll probably be a bit fresher.

Williams strengths are as a vertical threat and a red zone threat. So I think that's how he'll be used this year. One of his main weaknesses is that he hasn't really shown that he can run all the routes, which limits his ability as a short/intermediate threat. Hopefully, that will develop with time.

Using Williams as a deep threat doesn't preclude using Dez as a deep threat as well.

Route running is the typical complaint with most rookie WRs coming out. There's always a weaker point in someone's game. If you all recall, Austin was essentially Edward Scissorhands his first season while in the uniform. His speed and build kept him here and allowed him to polish up his other skills...including catching the ball.

Williams will be a good WR. He is obviously not a Dez Bryant, so it's unfair to compare the guy to receivers who have 'breakaway speed'...or polished route runners. That's why he wasn't a #1 pick. Incidentally...Michael Irvin made his living getting open and not a breakaway YAC receiver. Before anyone chimes in with a Williams=Irvin comment, I am NOT comparing the two. Simply pointing out that the guy can be effective notwithstanding the fact he isn't a composite of Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, and Michael Irvin. Hell, if he stays on the field for 16 games, he'll be worth more than Austin the past few seasons.

I don't know or pretend to know much about the player, but my eyes see a long-strider with slow burst, but good top end speed.

Looks an awful lot like Roy Williams WR. I hope not, but is that the comparable for this guy?

I sure hope Miles can stay healthy, when he has been, he's been a beast.

I don't think he plays anything like RW...

How often are rookie WRs going to beat out a veteran like Austin? The question is who will be the third WR. Or better yet will Williams or anyone else take some snaps away from the apparent incumbent at the 3rd WR.

You mean, besides the fact that he has prototypical size, speed, and led the NCAA in receiving yards? Yeah, nothing special about that combination.
And his stats onl got better AFTER RGIII....naw nothing special at all...

I think the best thing to come out of a little competition will be that Miles' hammies will feel much better all year.

Austin has beat himself out like 5 times in his career. He found a way to lose to unathletic Pat Crayton by missing large parts of TC a couple years in a row. He was battling the "prolific" Sam Hurd.

MA has put together two quality WR1 seasons and that's it. His best season he emerged from no where and churned teams for over 1300 yards. But other than that his best ever total is 1041 yards receiving on a season. That was Lance Moore's total last year....

Dez Bryant already bested Miles' best ever season. He had 1382 and 12 TDs last year. During which he suffered a broken finger and other nagging injuries but found a way to perform.

We severely overrate Miles Austin around here, IMO. His 4 seasons as a starting WR average 60 catches for 900 yards.

I hope the guy is healthy and makes some big plays for us because he will certainly be well paid for his efforts. But his shelf life in Dallas isn't long unless he agrees to a pay cut IMHO.

No question. I think TWill already has, maybe not in the sense of being the more featured option in the offense, but T Will pretty clearly has to be the favorite to take the number two spot, with Miles in the slot.

Just to put it out there, I think Harris will backup the 2 and the slot, and from there it's choosing if you want Cole to be the slot option or if you keep Coale to backup the second receiver spot.

Agreed. It seems pretty certain, at least IMO, that Williams will be opposite Dez with Miles in the slot. The only question is will Miles still be here after this season.

Ok Dez had 1 more TD and 62 more yards than Miles did for his "Breakout Season". Let me preface this with Miles is NOT better than Dez by ANY stretch of the imagination. With that said, I don't think Austin is overrated just his potential is overshadowed by his chronic hamstring injuries which extremely frustrating considering what he is capable of producing. I guarantee you that IF he wasn't injured, he would be putting up his 2009 numbers with no problem and we wouldn't be having this conversation BUT the unfortunate reality is that he was and we are.

I don't know much about Williams, but Harris was developing last year, he's a tough player that makes plays and doesn't go down easy. I would hate to see him get less playing time because some rookie got drafted and is being gifted a spot over him.

Harris does not line up as an Outside WR and Williams is not a slot WR, If Harris is competing for time it will be with Austin not Williams. Right now get the 3 best WR out there and to hell with peoples pet cats. I like Harris as well but other teams loaded at WR manage to get their WR out on the field contributing to the good of the team I don't care about the individuals I want to win give me fresh WR we can rotate in and out who starts who the heck cares.

Disgusts me how everyone is ready to give up on Miles Austin. Dude is still a very good receiver and important to this team's offense.

The guy has yet to play one down in an NFL game, or even a scrimmage for that matter. Anointing him the outside starting spot over Austin is premature. He is a 3rd draft pick, not a sure fire stud early in the 1st.

He played great in college, yet that is college.

He will get significant playing time this season, probably switching with Miles letting Austin slide into the slot.

IMO, the starting three for the first game is Dez, Miles and Harris and slowly working Williams in.

Of course, Austin could pull a hammy or Harris/Dez get injured then things change. Barring injuries, Williams does not begin his NFL career starting on the outside.

All in my opinion.....

Yeah, let's not deal in hyberbole!! Baylor only lost Kendall Wright and Josh Gordon, two of the top 5 rookie WRs in the NFL last year. So it seems like there would be more balls to go around. Add that to the fact that Florence threw for 4309 yards..right at where Griffin threw and you have a guy whose stats go up.

Now take scouting into account regarding a player who is in Art Briles run and shoot type offense and you have to look at other measurables. One of those, as discussed earlier in here is route running..the dreaded thing that plagued Ogletree and others and what many said caused Tony's int's to go up. Every scouting report said his negatives were that he started slow on routes and don't finish others. Also said his speed was tops when behind DBs but didn't have top end speed in traffic out of cuts. So to me we are looking at a guy who needs some adjusting to the game. I sure wish people wouldn't just assume that these guys will be NFL ready vs top competition and with more intricate offenses. You hope he has a season like the guys above but that's not a given...50-60 catches.

Nope, alot of you act like Austin is chopped liver. The guy scores tds and almost had a 1000 yrds even being as injured as he was. Williams will be developed just like Austin, and Harris were. Only thing that will stop austin from starting are his hammies

I expect Williams to take over for Austin in the not too distant future. I think maybe next offseason the Cowboys might cut the cord with Austin. If it's feasible with the cap.

With us expected to run alot of 2 TE sets. I expect 2 WRs out wide. It has been mentioned that Williams is not a slot guy, but a wide guy. so to make is a battle between Austin and Williams, its best to ask who is out there on the 2 TE set.

I think if he looks good, he will spell Austin to keep him healthy.. I suspect this will not work, and Williams will have to play atleast 4 games as the number 2 this year.

No. It takes most WR's 3 years to figure things out in the NFL.
