Does Garrett still get the credit for building the team?

I actually think we have a good team on paper. Sure we need a better backup QB and better safeties but this is not a 4- 9 team on paper even with a bad QB.So many credited Garrett for building the team the last four years, does he still get the credit now that more people have soured on him? Personally, I do not know whether to credit him or not but I do believe he played a part in building this team. Would he serve the team better in a front office position rather than on the sidelines? Would he even accept such a move?

The only thing that has been rebuilt is the Oline.

Maybe he should be our Oline coach.

I think that Jason has done a good job getting rid of players that personally threaten his tenuous authority.
I believe that he has adopted a smart and mercurial definition of RKG that suits whatever player Jerry drafts for him.
He has also had a Machiavellian knack for supporting the candidacy of coordinators that have been absolute failures as head coaches, providing Jerry with little incentive to battlefield promote them no matter how badly Jason continues to fail on Sundays.

Garrett should get credit for helping build the team. How much? Only the Jones, McClay, and scouting dept know for sure.

But I reckon this thread was set up for yet another JG bash session.

Not really. Anyone who knows my post history knows how I feel about him so I will not bash him in this thread but I am soliciting opinions. With Jerry now making a few comments about our situation the last two games and most believing Garrett is safe due to his contract, I was just wondering if Jerry could move him to the front office . If he did play a major role in bringing in the current personell, then I think he would be great in the front office as a defacto GM without the title. It would help Jerry save a little face and may be great for the team.

Yes, he still gets all the credit, and he does not need to go to the front office yet. He is a very good coach. People always want to find some one to blame other than the players. No one in the organization is blameless, but the players that has been playing all season gets the brunt of the blame. Garrett is a good HC, yes he knows what it takes to build a good team, but he still needs help from his staff, scouts GM, COO etc. A good HC is only as good as his staff. Wherever you find a good to great HC you will have a good or great staff and support system/organization etc

Garrett never built anything. The notion was foolish then as it is now. Garrett simply doesnt handle the personnel. That is one of the big problems here. If you are the head coach and you arent in Jerrys office every day complaining about how bad Weedon stinks then you are all but useless.

The only thing that has been rebuilt is the Oline.

Maybe he should be our Oline coach.

That was built by Callahan... Jason brought Houck originally from Miami and built a line in man-blocking schemes preferring big, hefty lineman. Garrett never coached or played under a zone scheme like Callahan's. Is anybody going to seriously argue that was his vision? We also drafted bums to fit in that scheme during his OC days here.

Houck retired and Jerry brought in Callahan, who in his very first year was threatening the job of Garrett by getting promoter to OC and play-calling duties.

The only exception we got outside of Callahan was Smith (not counting Collins, who pretty much chose us) , who Jerry was looking to replace at LT to protect Romo's blindside when Flozell departed. The very next year, when Garrett became HC for the first time, they leveraged their draft and got Claiborne. And Jason was saying a month before the draft they weren't going to target 'needs' but the BPA as always, saying the year prior when they drafted Smith was an exception. And even that isn't really legitimate because Smith was potentially the best OL to come out in years and arguably the BPA at that pick.

The year after that, the coaches and FO targeted Floyd but it was Callahan who pushed for Frederik. And after that, the Cowboys had three defensive players slated that were drafted before Miller.

Garrett didn't build anything. They drafted TEs for his offense, because they thought they could mimic what the Pats were doing. He also chose Felix over Chris Johnson and Dez was picked in the first round for his ailing offense.

I'll say it again.. Garrett offers nothing.. The Commanders are playing with injuries and have four FIRST year offensive linemen playing right now under Callahan. They lost their starting Center, Lichensteiger or however you spell his name.

You cant use the word Great with Garrett for anything. Why would he be a good front office guy? Doing what? Clapping? Cmon.

It depends on how responsible he was in getting our current personnel. To that, I do not know the answer. Lots of people gave him that credit during the 8 - 8 seasons and last year but I do not see anyone saying that anymore. I dislike him coaching as much as anyone but if he did play a major role in building this roster then I think he would be good in the front office. I happen to think we have a very good roster. If he is responsible then I would like him to keep on building it but away from the sidelines.

If he wants to be HC and be the ra-ra guy, fine. I think he's a positive influence and a good guy from that perspective.

What we need is a dynamic playcaller and a change in philosophy on defense. Our offensive schemes can be found in any high school game across the country on a Friday night. I know I'm not the only one who watches probably too much football every week, but I see other teams may with a lot more variety and flare than us. I shouldn't have to provide evidence, but if you're seeking some, see how many 3rd and 1's we have where it's 11 vs. 9 or how we utilize guys like Escobar or Whitehead where they're only on the field because the play is designed to go to them. If you're a defender and didn't fall asleep in your meetings, you have a pretty idea where it's going.

Defensively, I don't think we're that far off. The turnovers are disappointing this year, but we've hung around in games only to see them get shredded in the 4th quarter due to exhaustion. A good offense will benefit the defense. We need a safety upgrade and some more depth at LB, but I'm hoping that another year for a young front-four to develop with a touch more aggressiveness will help.

1. I don't give a rats rear end who gets credit for what with this team recent history. That's for the history books to decide later.
2. Give him a job anywhere except coaching or player evaluation, I don't care if he sells popcorn.
3. I don't care what he would accept. He's been coaching with daddy's $$ for the last 5+ years so would be lucky to get an offer to be anywhere in this league at this point.
4. All I want right now is a leader to come in an coach this team up to a respectable and competitive level.
Sorry I'm so done with this team firing a few coordinators to find a winning team. They have to look at the real issue (FO and HC).

"Build" in what sense? I don't think he's heavily involved in player acquisition but i could be wrong. Jerry, Stephen and Will McClay are the dominant voices in that area.

I definitely have no arguments with anything you said, (my post history can prove that). I am doing my best to look at this in a positive light. Most think Garrett is safe based on his contract. WIth Jerry starting to make some comments on our situation, could Jerry possibly promote Garrett and hire different coach?
