Does Jerry's Comment Hint at Extensive Cowboys Free Agent Activity?

Jerry Jones' remarks today that he expects "ten to eleven new Cowboys" on this year's roster intrigues, given that Dallas only has six picks in April's draft. Dallas has been good at producing undrafted free agents in recent years. Tony Romo and Miles Austin headline a group that added Kevin Ogletree last year.

Even the most optimistic draft outcome would see seven or maybe eight rookies. Where would the other three to four new players come from?

Free agency offers a possibility, though the Final Eight restrictions mean Dallas won't be able to sign many big ticket players. The expanded free agent rules mean the talent pool will be relatively shallow, unless...

teams cut a lot of veterans with long-term deals their teams no longer feel are good investments. We won't know the full number of such bad-contract cuts until the free agency period begins next week.

Don't discount trades. With the playoff field limited to some extent, and teams less willing to swap draft picks, given the depth of this year's class, we may see something football has never had, relative to sports like baseball or basketball -- a good old fashioned hot-stove league, or in the NFL's case, a sun-deck league. Stay tuned.

Jerry, as much as he might want to, can't turn six picks into eleven players.

Or more likely he had a few drinks at lunch and was talking too much again.

Even if he wanted to get overactive in free agency, there simply is not much there within reason unless teams really get irresponsible.

He gets excited and talks, but he has done this sort of thing before. It is just the excitement getting the best of him. Stephen will probably have to calm him down.

Jerry can't win.

If he doesn't threaten players jobs, then it's a systemic problem with an organization that doesn't hold players accountable.

If he does threaten player jobs, then he's been drinking too much and is off his rocker.

I think he realizes that this is the year to dump contracts and not take cap hits in 2011 if needed. The problem is you can't just dump a ton of players because you need to find replacements.

Thomas Jones just got dumped after having a 1,400 yard rushing season behind a rookie QB who struggled. But by 2011 chances are he'll be done with and they decided to dump his contract now so they don't have to worry about a future cap hit.

Every team is thinking this way right now and if they have a player whose contract they want to dump, they can feasibly do it now because of the lack of a salary cap for the year. Couldn't always cut players whenever you wanted to before without it screwing up your cap number.

Now you can. Jerry is just telling the press what every team in the league is thinking. Why it is such a shocking statement really confuses me.

I would assume that Jerry is also factoring in our three players that were injured last season and didn't see the field. Robert Brewster, Brandon Williams and Stephen Hodge will literally be new to this team since none of them were active the entire season last year. That would move that 11 player figure down to eight, with six draft spots and two spots that are to be determined.

No, the premise of the thread was that his comments hinted at extensive free agency action. I don't believe there is a possibility of that happening unless, like I said, teams get irresponsible.

As for the commentary about threatening jobs, when it is applied to everyone, and not excluding certain high priced underachieving "superstar" WRs, then he could "win".

And they also have a capable player ready to step in as demonstrated in the playoffs. Do we have that if we start lopping off the Flozell Adams and Ken Hamlins off of the roster?

Exactly.

6 draft picks.

3 guys who were on IR, Brewster, Hodge, and B Williams.

and around 2 FAs.

There's your 11 "new" players.

I don't think the final 8 teams are going to be restricted at all. Teams 5-8 can sign one big money FA and all 8 teans can sign anyone cut from another team. By some of the reports, the best players available may be those cut which means any team can go after them without restriction.

I think Jerry will upgrade at least two positions with free agents before the draft and there may be 1 or 2 surprise cuts.

That is far more likely than some grand free agency spree.

Four players (Brewster, Williams, Hodge and Hamlin) will all be inserted into prime position to carve out a spot.

I do not see free agency as a realistic option to makeover the roster.

This is the most likely thing I would imagine.

Well if that's all you're saying, you may not want to open by saying he's a drunkard.

He is just setting the tone for the offseason and team next year. He doesn't want complacency. It doesn't mean anything in terms of how many people will get cut or FAs get signed, IMO.

Help me understand this...I didn't think DALLAS could sign just any FA they wanted to?

Now every other reporter out there can contemplate between now and the start of the season the possibility of pretty much every high profile guy that's going to be available possibly coming to Dallas.
