... the liklihood of LeCharles Bentley landing in Dallas?

Or does it not affect it at all?

Thoughts?

Payton fully understands value of keeping a good young center. Bentley won't be going anywhere.& that was probably the case even before Payton went down there. It's not like Saints have another player who would warrant the "franchise" designation.

I wonder more about what it means for Dan Campbell? Will Payton employ the Parcells' principle of bringing your guys with you? Campbell was with Payton in New York and Dallas, and he might be a help in that lockerroom.

2005 Franchise Tag Numbers

These figures are used to compute the one year contract offers to franchise players and transition players.

An Exclusive Franchise player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 15, or 120% of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, he becomes a "non-exclusive" franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club's offer or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match.

A Transition player must be offered a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120% of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation.

Cornerbacks
Franchise tender: $8,816,000

Defensive ends
Franchise tender: $6,666,000

Defensive tackles
Franchise tender: $5,134,000

Linebackers
Franchise tender: $5,950,000

Safeties
Franchise tender: $4,968,000

Punters/kickers
Franchise tender: $1,787,000

Running backs
Franchise tender: $6,323,000

Quarterbacks
Franchise tender: $8,078,000

Offensive linemen
Franchise tender: $7,424,000

Tight ends
Franchise tender: $2,687,000

Wide Receivers
Franchise tender: $7,768,000

Given those numbers, it would be very costly for the Saints to franchise him. That is a lot to pay a center.

I don't ever remember a center being franchised ever before.

Wasn't Kevin Mawae franchised once before? You're right, left tackles are the only offensive linemen I can think of with the franchise tag.

wouldn't tackles, guard and centers all be different? Tackles are usaually the most expensive

You don't think anyone would say Payton was allowed to go to the Saints as a Parcells puppet...? No way does Payton let him go without a fight, and we would have to pay the price. Jerry is probably still snakebit about the Galloway deal, and might try to veto it even if it was considered.
I would love to get Bentley in here, and yes I would pay him fair market value, but I believe with Allen and Rivera and Flo and Campbell all being veteran blockers, we'll fill this spot with a rookie. If Allen or Rivera are released or restructured, then it becomes much more likely though... JMO
