I just think that some of the older players in these rivalries would retaliate without making any bones about it only to start up or extend these rivalries. They knew that they were going to represent their team until they retired or were replaced so needed to set the tone for their defenses. It does not seem to happen with the present NFL system since players are moved around much more than before. Some of the loyalty to represent the team in that rivalry seems to be lost. I have nothing to back that, but just seems that way.
Certainly agree fans and media hype it up.
I think some of it was the fact at one time guys spent their entire careers with one team so there was a long build up of pay back between players and teams. Now days players move around so much and the loyalty is not the same. The rivial today is the team you will be playing for tomorrow.
