This is an article about moments in Jerry's 25 years. The acquisition of Charles Haley was brought up. Lacewell was our College and Pro Personnel guy. I know he is officially no longer here but this type of stuff scares me. Sorry for another thread but this offseason/pre-draft time is brutal on my football needs.

Aug. 26, 1992: Jones had just hired his longtime buddy Larry Lacewell, a former college coach, to be his director of college scouting. Not long after he reported for work at Valley Ranch, Lacewell received a call from a 49ers official who wanted to know whether the Cowboys were interested in the talented but troubled Charles Haley.

"I'd honestly never heard of the guy," Lacewell told me a few years ago. "I think the note sat on my desk for three or four days before I finally walked it down to Jerry's office. When I told him what it was, he nearly dove over the desk."

Haley would become the most dominant pass-rusher on three Super Bowl-winning teams.

I mean I know you learn on the job sometimes but I'm no sure over the years who else he has or hasn't heard of...

Not sure what to think. Lacewell might just being saying that to embellish a story. Or maybe his memory isnt very god.

Who cares? It all worked out and we got 3 rings and SF only got one during our run.

Too much obsession with Lacewell around here.

That's a fairly famous story, but it's unbelievable.

For some reason with all the random minutiae I've heard, I hadn't heard this. Though I never paid much attention to Lacewell in the past. Just was enjoying the read and it jumped out. Not sure I'm stunned he didn't know him or that the note sat for a few days where we might miss him.

Right? Neither are acceptable. It's a pretty amazing story, when you stop to think about how incredibly out of the loop he had to have been to have not known who Charles Haley was at at that point in Charles' career.

Oct. 8, 1995: Jerry Jones challenges NFL owner Paul Tagliabue by signing separate sponsorship deals with Nike and Pepsi. The league sued Jones for $300 million and then he countersued for $750 million. The two sides eventually dropped their lawsuits. Jones had established himself as a maverick owner and an irritant to the old guard. But he eventually became one of the most respected owners when it came to league business.
Owner. lol.

What happened to that fiery owner, who sued the league back in 1995, when the Mara/uncapped penalty farce took place? And what's he going to do about the Ratliff stinkfest?

I know. I know. Settle down, DE. ;)

Suffice it to say, Jerry can screw up enough on his own without any help from Larry Lacewell. It's long been said that he relies far too much upon various people who aren't particularly capable. Granted, this may be old news but it's still damaging, nevertheless.

“We even called on Barry Switzer, who candidly is one of the best running back evaluators there has been and is, because he has seen so many and really studies them,” Jones said. “So we had Barry weigh in on us in the draft room there tonight, but of course he really knew him well because DeMarco Murray is from up in Oklahoma.”

Lacewell, meanwhile, endorsed Carter.

“Larry Lacewell is one of the best linebacker evaluators that there is,” Jones said, “and he really got to weigh in good on Bruce Carter and did.

Lacewell was calling the Kiffin hire a coup and saying it was the best thing the Cowboys have done in years. He is a hack.

My question is this...

Why on earth would he need to consult with Switzer about DeMarco Murray?

Was he some unknown prospect from Ouachita Baptist or something?

What is wrong with trusting what his scouts and scouting director tell him? Why would he need validation from his old drinking buddies?
