Dolphins | Parcells not looking to trade Taylor
Fri, 6 Jun 2008 07:51:53 -0700

Updating a previous item, ESPN.com reports Miami Dolphins director of football operations Bill Parcells said that he is not looking to trade LB Jason Taylor, according to the Palm Beach Post. "Nobody's ever off the market. ... I'm not trying to be flippant, but I would say, yeah (he's off the market)," Parcells said. "For me to say that we are looking to do something, that'd be wrong."

Parcells explains JT snub during long-ago visit
by Armando Salguero
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2008/06/parcells-explai.html

I know you are tired of more Jason Taylor soap opera updates but The Miami Herald fancies itself the paper of record on the Dolphins, though sometimes there's not enough paper to handle the entire record.

Such is the case in a story I filed about Parcells for tomorrow's paper. The story discusses a dozen different topics -- they pile up when Parcells talks only once every six months -- but I couldn't get into his explanation of the snub of Jason Taylor. Not enough room in the paper for all of it.

But there is enough room here so indulge me.

You may remember I wrote a while back that Taylor was angry at Parcells because during a break in the Dancing with the Stars competition, he visited Dolphins training camp, hung with his teammates for a couple of minutes, then went upstairs to see Parcells.

Taylor entered a room where Parcells and coaches and scouts where breaking down tape. Taylor stepped in and Parcells basically acted as if he wasn't there. That made Taylor so angry he wanted to challenge Parcells to a fistfight, or worse, a dance contest.

Not really. But it did understandably irk Taylor.

The story made national news for whatever reason. Taylor confirmed what I wrote during his press conference Sunday, and today, Parcells also confirmed my report even as he explained his role:

"I'm not trying to make an excuse, but there was no intentional, calculated, or disrespectful thing that I personally did," Parcells said. "I know that for a fact. I wasn't paying attention and I didn't see him and I didn't hear him. That's the truth. That's what happened from my perspective."

I can buy that. I think Jason Taylor will ultimately buy that, although Parcells said he and Taylor have not talked about it.

Do you buy that?

Parcells: No problem with Taylor returning
In an interview, Bill Parcells touched on everything from Jason Taylor's future to his own role with the Dolphins to the team's quarterback situation.
BY ARMANDO SALGUERO
asalguero@MiamiHerald.com

Bill Parcells had not spoken extensively about the Dolphins since December, but he finally opened up Thursday, sharing his opinions on various subjects, including the rift between the team and defensive end Jason Taylor.

Parcells said the Dolphins are ''not actively'' trying to trade Taylor and left open the possibility of Taylor rejoining the team.

In a 22-minute interview with The Miami Herald, Parcells also said:

• He originally was offered the Dolphins' head coaching job and then the general manager job before becoming the team's executive vice president of football operations.

• He would not guarantee staying the four years of his contract.

• He has ''seen some things that are encouraging'' about Miami's quarterbacks, but added he doesn't know if any of them is the right guy. He also gave his opinion of the defensive line and special teams.

On the Taylor front, the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders and San Diego Chargers have shown varying degrees of interest in making a trade. The Jacksonville Jaguars, interested before the draft, are no longer, according to ESPN.

Parcells, available to the press as part of the Gatorade Tiger Moonshot Challenge to benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation, left the door open for Taylor to rejoin the team, even if he misses training camp.

''Sure, you can do it,'' Parcells said. ``Sure you can do it because I've done it before. [Lawrence Taylor] held out. You think I didn't have a few knockdown and drag-outs with LT? But he's my guy. So maybe this guy will be our guy, too. You never know.

``I do think he's a good player. Could we put him back on the team? Yeah. You think we don't want good players? We want good players.''

Of course they aren't looking to trade him. Saying as much would bring down his value. But for the right price, I say they part with him in an instant.

Jason Taylor a no-show at mandatory minicamp; practice highlights
By Harvey Fialkov and Omar Kelly
Sun-Sentinel.com

DAVIE

As expected, Dolphins Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor was one of three players who missed the first mandatory minicamp of the offseason. He will most likely be fined more than $8,000 per day.

The other Dolphins who missed Friday morning's practice were cornerback Michael Lehan, who suffered a severely sprained right ankle during Wednesday's organized training session, and defensive tackle Randy Starks, who coach Tony Sparano said has an "excused absence," for today only.

When asked if Taylor's absence also was excused, Sparano quickly asked if there were other questions with a dismissive wave of his right hand.

Last weekend at his charity golf tournament, Taylor said he would be absent this weekend so he could attend his brother's high school graduation and tend to an undisclosed legal issue. He had informed Sparano that he would not be in attendance, and when Sparano was asked if fines were forthcoming, he said that all disciplinary actions will not be disclosed and kept between the team and players.

Taylor has also not committed to attending training camp when that starts in late July.

While Lehan, a starter last season, wasn't on the field, it's possible that he was receiving treatment in the training room.

The extent of his injury hasn't been revealed, but his agent, Craig E. Domann, said earlier this week that it doesn't appear to be as serious as it looked and he possibly could return in 4-6 weeks, which coincides with the start of training camp.

Sparano wasn't very optimistic about that timetable on Friday, but acknowledged that he's excited about seeing what some of the young cornerbacks on the roster could do in practice. He also said the front office has ruled out adding a veteran free agent at this time.

In on-field news, linebacker Joey Porter was starting in Taylor's spot as the hybrid pass-rushing linebacker on the right side with Charlie Anderson filling in at Porter's strong side linebacker spot.

The starting safeties were Yeremiah Bell and Jason Allen, with Will Allen and Andre' Goodman at the cornerback spots. Joey Thomas, a three-year veteran, and Nate Jones, who spent the first five years of his career in Dallas, filled in for Lehan as the nickel cornerback.

Vonnie Holliday and Matt Roth were the two starting defensive ends, and they were backed up by 2008 draft picks Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford, who filled in for Starks.

The starting quarterback on Friday was Josh McCown, but Sparano has said he would be alternating which quarterback works with the first team, so expect John Beck to start in today's afternoon session, or possible on Saturday.

The starting guards were rookie Shawn Murphy, who manned the left guard spot, and Justin Smiley.

Tuna needs to retire his football act.

He talks out of both sides of his mouth and sounds both stupid and senile blaming hearing aids and such. Like his buddy Knight, he's a disrespectful old, grump out of touch with players and the league in which he coaches.

Sad as alot of us had high hopes for him in D.

Has anyone ever explained what Sparano was doing when he said at the news conference a couple of weeks ago that Taylor wasn't going to be with the team, even in training camp?

That's what got everyone asking questions.

Now, Parcells says he wanted him here all along.
