I have learned you don't sleep on any player. Heck Cowboys have had some UDFA over the years who have done very good jobs. Drew Pearson, Tony Romo and Cole Beasley just 3 off the top of my head. Draft is important but once the draft is over as far as I am concerned we go back to square 1 where all players regardless of where they are selected must show what they can do where it matters....on the field of play

Agreed. Way too much based on draft position. Good teams are willing to move on from a bust early on in the procees, or keep and play UDFAs if their play warrants it.

I was an original "wow this guy's got a potential role" person around here, but I'm getting the sense that the hype might be outgrowing the reality now. He is a long shot at best to even make the practice squad... I don't think he was ranked in the top 25 in any reputable source's list, and more often than not was somewhere around 35 or 40 in the 8-10 that I reviewed in the last hour. That could be meaningless, but even among UDFAs, he doesn't appear to have been all that coveted. Forgive the so-tired cliche, but tapping the brakes makes some sense from where I sit.

I don't think anyone is hyping him.

I think most people are realistic in his potential, could be a solid third down receiving back with some return ability. I would much rather have him on the roster than Whitehead as a returner, someone who I think has failed in that role.

Where he was ranked doesn't matter to me - he shouldn't be ranked anywhere, he was an undrafted FA because he's not a three down back, he's not a starter. He's a role player with a some nifty moves and can cut on a dime while maintaining good speed. Personally, since we don't know how to use Morris and McFadden - I'd much rather us go back to finding a new Dunbar/ Randle since it seemed we knew how to use them better.

Well, he's small and not real fast, runs upright, so he's not going to get many yards after contact. His main assets are his quick feet, vision and receiving ability, which make him suited for only a specialty role as a third-down back, but that's if he can block. I could see his movement skills earning him a place on the practice squad to see if he can learn how to block effectively at that size.

We knew how to use Dunbar?

Yes, we did. Until his injury in 2015, he was on pace to have a monster year in receiving. In 2014, despite being a third down guy while Murray was in on nearly every play and Randle taking up some time as well, he still ended up with 217 yards receiving.

Hmmm. 4.62 forty time. That is pretty slow in a straight line, but this guy can cut on a dime and looks to have great vision. It will be interesting to see what he can do. Probably a practice squad guy or kick returner type.

When it comes to 190 lbs RB it's hard to look past a 4.68 time. He looks slow running in college too.

I'm willing to keep an open mind and let his play on the NFL field speak for itself but I have zero expectations of success.

It's the kiss of death, unfortunately. It looks like he's got good vision for the position, at least. But I agree. He can't make it without speed.

Who knows if I'm right, but I think there's almost bound to be some other option that will surface between now and Game #1. Some people are talking up Dexter McCluster as a free agent option, but I think fwiw they'll just hold off until the end of training camp... making sure McFadden is healthy, and if so, poised to jump on the best 3rd down back on the market.

If lucky whitehead can be a 16 game starter then anybody can.

Response forgets that there's crazy competition for only maybe 5 open slots on offense... so, a little more complex than that. As a rookie, Lucky as I recall didn't have that kind of headwind to conquer, and moreover, he could boast a stout 40 time. Just sayin.

Luckily that track and field crap goes out the window once TC comes around.

He's no Gus Johnson, to be sure, but he's definitely got a shot to make the 53 based on his KR capabilities and can play a future role in the offense like Dunbar did (or was supposed to...). Sure, he's not 4.40 fast and gets caught from behind a lot, but his vision and ability to cut/change lanes without losing any speed means he's going to make a lot of people miss. I'll take a guy that can get chunk yardage like that anytime. BTW, Dwayne Harris wasn't a burner, either, especially once he started taking fat-pills.

Not hate at all but he's a poor fit. He needs touches to be effective and barring injury he will never get them here. Add in that he doesn't play special teams and it's hard to justify keeping him on the 53.
They signed him because he is a good fit for what they want. A 3rd down change of pace back.
