Here's my final conversation with a knowledgable sports writer I've been friends with for 20+ years.
Chargers are still getting phone calls; chances of a tradedown are on the decline as SD is asking for #1 value in their offer since, in so many words, 'neither Wentz or Goff are really worth #1 and the #3 is the true #1 pick'. That's cooling some teams since, like it or not, Goff/Wentz are #1 and #2.
Assuming the pick stays, says SD big board is still unsettled. It's either Ramsey or Tunsil with Buckner a falling darkhorse now. Coaches are split between the two, but thinks when push comes to shove, it's better to pick the franchise OT vs. a franchise CB/S. Put the odds of Tunsil being drafted at 1:2 right now.
Dallas is still an interesting case study. Not sure if the Elliott talk that's springing up like wildfire is last minute jitters or simply implying the sales tactic of 'fear of loss'. Both Miami and SF covet Elliott so there's a line of thinking that Dallas is stiring this up last minute to ensure that someone leapfrogs them to grab Elliott so the Cowboys can ensure Ramsey falls to them. Dallas simply hasn't invested money or high picks into the position so why now? Much like my previous conversation, said this was the tightest Valley Ranch has ever been in terms of leaks (credits Stephen with that).
Still believes that it will be tough to see many more trades in the top ten as this is considered to have eight elite(ish) prospects. Two are off the board in Goff and Wentz which leaves Tunsil, Ramsey, Elliott, Bosa, Buckner, and Jack.
Speaking of Jack, knee recovery looks on target. Problem with knees is that you don't know how they'll hold up with a season of grind much less 5-10 years of work. Cleveland is most likely to take him.
While we're discussing knees, Jaylon Smith. A team will burn a pick for him in the 4th round but not prior to that. His dropfoot is a major concern as his game is built on athletcism. Much like Jack, don't pay attention to a ten second Twitter video and the odd Vine. Rehab simply isn't the same as the grind of a NFL year. Knows that most cold weather teams have removed him from their boards completely. He'll make his home in Cali, Arizona, Texas, Florida or the south to minimize problems with seasonality and the joint.
Unfortunately, that's all that was talked about as he had to run. Can't wait for Thursday!
