Rookie quarterback Matt Cassel outdid his entire college career in his first NFL game.

He led four scoring drives as the defending champion New England Patriots beat the host Cincinnati Bengals 23-13 Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams.

"It's the first time I threw a touchdown pass since high school," Cassel marveled. "Hopefully, I can just do well and earn a spot on the team. It was definitely good to start off that way."

This Cassel kid looked awesome! How in the heck does New England keep finding these QB's..........Brady.....now Cassel in the lower rounds. Cassel first TD pass since high school? Give me a break.......

Man, our Cowboys have got to figure this QB of the future gig out soon!

Two words: System Quarterback

It's not so much the players, as it is the system. Joe Montana and Steve Young are good examples of system QBs, although Montana could of played well in any system, he excelled in the WCO. Young was nothing until he played in the WCO.

Hey, it would not bother me if we drafted a QB every year.

May we never find ourselves in this type of predicament again.

What's it going to be then, eh?

So, why don't we just get a good system?

That is the Ron Wolf philosophy.

I don't understand why we ignore it. Eventually, you have to hit on someone.

I'm right there with you. What's the worst that could happen, we end up with a couple of projects at back up QB?

morning pops happy game day!

It is amazing. This guy Cassel was like one pick away from being Mr. Irrelevant. But people that think it's the system are off on this. Rohan Davey had a solid college career and he hasn't exactly lit it up in the couple years he's been backing up Brady (at least in the pre-season games he's played). NE took a flyer on a kid that was one of the most recruited QB's in the country out of HS who just happened to get beat out by a couple Heisman winners and didn't get to play college ball. But he did get to practice against a pretty good college D.:)

At that stage of the draft they can roll the dice and it looks like they rolled double 6's. When you consider this kid hasn't played since HS his performance last night was nothing short of incredible, even if he had some bad throws.

How would you know he could?

He never played in anything but a WCO in the Pros even in KC where he had his struggles anyway.

I agree, cbz.

You're always stocked at the most important position on the team, and you can do like Green Bay and trade back-ups (Brooks, Brunell) occasionally to get more picks.

Jimmy did it when he added Walsh shortly after drafting Aikman. He made out like a bandit when he traded Walsh to New Orleans.

The Texans have done this to some degree, also. We'll see who was right about Henson.

My only problem is, if we draft them we won't play them unless something horrible happens to our starter.

BP hates young QB's and is too stubborn to play the young guys if the Starter sucks.

Exactly........Jerry somehow forgot that you needed to be in good hands with "AllState" especially at the QB position.

Good morning Chief........enjoy the game

There are times, even for BP, that you forced to draw to that inside straight. ;)

Dallas used to go through a lot of 3rd string QBs but Landry always seemed to find a #2 guy and stick with him until his current starter retired then the #2 guys were ready to step right into the starting role on day one. Merideth backed up LeBaron, Morton backed up Merideth, Staubach backed up Morton and White backed up Staubach; it wasn't until he got away from that formula in the mid 80s that our QB situation went down the tubes.

We haven't had a good developmental QB on our team since Danny White; Aikman was thrown into the fire as a rookie as has been every young QB we have brought in since Aikman retired until now with Romo and Henson. Personally I am glad to see Parcells sticking with these young developmental QBs behind the vets he is bringing in, one of them will turn into our next franchise QB when Bledsoe retires.

Go ahead and draft a new QB every year is you like but don’t give up on the developmental guys you have just because you have a new toy. That is what bothers me about this drafting a new QB every year you get into this flavor of the week QB crap if you are not careful.

We can only hope that they would NOT play the young QB until they have had a chance to develop and get seasoned a bit first.
