Drew Brees Makes Sense

I keep reading suggestions about either trading for an established QB, or drafting one outright. I have a much less costly solution: Sign Drew Brees.

The guy is about to turn 27, which gives him another 9-10 quality years left. He had another solid year, with over 3,500 yrds. passing, around 65% accuracy, 15 ints. & 24 tds. I don't know what that calculates in terms of QB rating, but is has to be close to, if not over, 100.

The best part is that, if I'm not mistaken, he is an UFA this offseason. We don't have to give up anything but a fat signing bonus, and we've paid big ones for not even close to his talent. Plus, he already has 5 yrs. in the league, so he is already "there". He was sacked 24 times this year, and the SD line has protected him very well during his career. I know he just had shoulder surgery, but it's the kind Rich Gannon had just before he started really coming on as an NFL starting QB. In fact, Gannon said after the surgery that his shoulder actually felt better than ever.

Maybe the best part of all this, is that, if we decide to trade Romo, we'll have 3 Drews at QB. Tuna won't have to remember first names.....haha.

Would be a great backup for Bledsoe. Doubt we'll pay that much for a backup QB though.

Need to spend that $$ on Olinemen and another weapon for Bledsoe.

I had a feeling that shoulder injury just took Rivers off the market. Even with the improved prognosis, I dont think I would be in any hurry to trade Rivers, maybe trade Brees to some sucker if your not sure hes gunna be back 100%, but no way to do you trade Rivers now.

don't know what you were reading. He had surgery, he just didn't have rotator cuff damage.

Brees has successful operation

By Kevin Acee
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

January 6, 2006

The surgery was a success. Now comes the hard part for both Drew Brees and the Chargers.

The Chargers released a statement last night that described Brees' arthroscopic surgery yesterday in Birmingham, Ala., as "successful."

Dr. James Andrews repaired the torn labrum in Brees' throwing shoulder, injured in the Chargers' season finale on Saturday. Team spokesman Bill Johnston said no rotator cuff damage was found during the surgery.

Brees' arm will remain immobilized for at least a month before he begins an aggressive rehabilitation program. He is expected to begin throwing in four months and be ready to participate in training camp.

Brees had hoped to be ready to participate full-go in minicamp. "Though his recovery period is longer than we had hoped for, we couldn't be happier that Drew is expected to make a full recovery," Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said in the statement.

Smith, who did not return a phone message, will now have to decide what to do with Brees.

Before the surgery, it was believed the Chargers would begin negotiating with Brees on a long-term deal.

That remains a possibility, as does the chance they will again designate him as their franchise player, guaranteeing him approximately $9.7 million for the 2006 season.

What appears more likely now, however, is that the Chargers will put the transition tag on Brees. That would protect them in the event Brees does not recover as expected.

As a transition player, Brees would be offered the same one-year deal of approximately $9.7 million. But, unlike the franchise tag, the money would not be guaranteed until Brees made the opening-day roster.

Brees would be free to negotiate with other clubs, but the Chargers would retain the right to match any offer he received.

Unlike if Brees were a franchise player, if the Chargers chose not to match the offer sheet from another club, they would not receive draft picks as compensation. The Chargers must decide whether to designate Brees a franchise or transition player by Feb. 23.

If Brees was brought in, it would not be in a backup role.

If you had a chance to bring in Brees at a reasonale price and over a long term then you would have to cut Bledsoe in a heart beat. Brees can do what Bledsoe is doing but for the next 5 years at least.

I cant imagine the Chargers being stupid enough to let him slip away. Hes definately a top tier QB in my opinion and I would love to see him where a star on his helmet if San Diego pulled anohter Leaf and let him go.

His QB rating for this season was 89.2 and he has an 84.9 rating for his career.

I think it is unrealistic to expect Brees to play 9 to 10 more seasons. I think maybe 7 to 8 and that is plenty to ask for out of him for any team that is interested. In that amount of time, a team should be able to fill other needs and become a contender unless they are located in Arizona.

I have a feeling that as long as Parcells is the coach, Bledsoe will be the starter. Highly unlikely they bring in a vet to challenge him.

I could see us taking a QB sometime in the next couple of drafts to groom behind Bledsoe but that's about it.

The Chargers will never let Brees go, And theres no way we should give up any picks on him now that hes had first surgery.

Screw that, Kick Henson to the curb. In a heartbeat. Bledsoe can come in and releive Brees if hes injured. Henson cant do that.

I really really dislike Brees. I've seen him since he came out, and before the last year, I was screaming for them to dump him. Now that he got Gates to bail him out and LT to carry the load his stats are doing better. He has progressed, but I just do not like him at all. He is too short, and constantly has to do a jump throw i really hate, or a bootleg or whatever to create passing lanes for this midget. Plus before gates got there, he would always blow chargers games late in the game, like throw a key pick near the end or whatever. Plus his arm strength is garbage, and he just hurt his shoulder badly. and he will want a lot. zero interest in this guy.
