Anybody here own a drone? I'm tossing around the idea of purchasing one. Have been wanting one for some time now, and I can think of some fun usage out of it (good jetski footage as an example), but I am afraid it might turn into a novelty item. Take it everywhere at first, but once the shine wears off, it's an expensive toy in my closet. Hey, kind of like my GoPro. So, still kicking around the idea.

If you do own one, what one do you have experience with? So far it seems to me that DJI makes the best consumer drone. Just looking for opinions and/or directions.

My father-in-law bought me one for Christmas a few years ago, it was a Holy Stone I believe but forgot which model. It was in the $250 range, nothing fancy but it was cool to play with.

I took it on its inaugural flight in Half Moon Bay to video surfers at the Mavericks. Suffice it to say, my drone lies somewhere on the floor of the Pacific :lmao:

:lmao: That is another thing I am afraid of. Needless to say, if I do get one, I think I'm going to insure it somehow.

..Right....I wouldn't mind having a drone myself...I'd try and fly it around my neighborhood until I became an expert on it's maneuver-abilities...then I would order dozens of them and send them out on vanguard missions throughout the city with orders to....?...!... nevermind!

Definitely a passing fad. Don't do it. Their use is gonna get legislated up the wahoo anyway. In the UK, there are so many restrictions on them that it's already pointless owning one.

heh don't take up RC Helicopters. They are far more difficult to fly!

There's the toy range, under $300, and the high end, $1500+. Doesn't seem to be a good middle ground. I'd definitely go for one with autoreturn.

You already need a drone license to fly one, and the period for getting one for free ended a few years ago.

I'm pretty sure it would be cool for you for a few weeks, but then you'll be like "well, I wasted that money."

I think if you had a legitimate need for it as part of a job or hobby, it would be worth it and not just collect dust in a closet.

It just occurred to me that if it was a really good and stable one with a live camera feed (most cheap ones don't send a live feed, rather they record to a microsd card) it might be a great way to inspect an attic without having to crawl around in it.

I used to have a mini-helicopter. Wasn't anything special but it got up and could fly around. It was fun but it was light enough a good wind could catch it and scare the hell out of you. lol

I'd love to get a drone...but I'm afraid it would crash into a tree or water and bye bye my money...maybe you can buy insurance for them...

I thought this was kinda cool. This guy used a drone to take on a hornet's nest.
