Well, the Cowboys video board operator thinks he's a 1 technique.

I noticed that too. The guy sure seems motivated to kill it. Think he's a really good player, but just not one that this staff values high enough for #16. Now, I don't think we valued a guy like Frederick enough to draft at #18 last year, but after that move down the board, his value lined up with our then draft slot. Could easily see that being the case with Jernigan.

Yeah, I said in an earlier post that he could be this years Frederick.

  1. Clarence Hill ‏@clarencehilljr 11h
If jernigan is a 1 technique and the cowboys take him then it goes against the philosophy of a year ago and marinelli's own doctrine

@KeithDeuces @JC1053 @JJT_ESPNDallas @ktfuntweets got official word from two people on cowboys that Jernigan is a 1
Not just Broaddus getting word that the team sees Jernigan as a 1T... only other conceivable explanation is that the team loves him and is trying to send off the strongest possible message that he's not our guy. I believe the former explanation... Jernigan isn't our guy.

I think jernigan is a 1 tech only in this scheme and is a 2nd round player. 16 would be a big reach

glad your not our GM - and is the guy to dumb to play 3 Tech

it a move of like 3 feet - does that diminish his HUSTLE

sorry dude he will not fall -IMO

Oh the irony...

Is someone going to tell him that inability to play the 3T has nothing to do with smarts, or should I?

please do tell

A 3-technique tackle lines up between the offensive guard and tackle. A 3-technique tackle is supposed to run through his gap immediately. He is a 1-gap player. His job is not to block or get tied up in a block, but rather to be athletic and get himself into the offensive backfield and disrupt their plans. Because of this a 3-technique tackle is a lighter, more athletic guy than a nose tackle.

and what you don't think this Jerrigan

Why would we waste a visit on a guy we have no intention of drafting in the first? Jernigan most likely is not going to fall to the second round.

Just cause they view him as a 1T doesn't mean they won't draft him

You nailed the description, and no, the team does not think Jernigan fits that mold to the extent we need him to in order to pick him 16th.

If we slide down in the 1st round we can probably compromise some on our philosophies about not drafting a 1T high. Not all 1st round picks are made equal. At #31 last year we made a pick that we wouldn't have considered at #16, and the same could be true if we find ourselves in that position again.

I think Jernigan is the safest defensive line prospect in the draft. I don't think there is any chance he busts because he can play every position on the line. However, he may not have the lights out upside some of the other guys have. If it's in our plans to take a chance on someone undersized (Ford) or someone with injury issues (Easely) taking Jernigan would be a very wise move. Plug him in with Melton day one and watch the hershey highway flow in opposing quarterbacks pants.

good stuff here

It has been rumored, and mentioned by several coaches, that in many games last season (including the BCS game) Jernigan was asked to not fire gaps and instead stay home and play the run. In the majority of that video that looks like exactly what he's doing.

That tells me he is coachable, unselfish and would give Melton a chance to fire gaps.

Jernigan is a top level football player.

maybe they view him as a one because of personnel fit, ie melton is the 3 and he would play next to him. if melton got injured i have no doubt jernigan would slide over to the 3.

Dude, have you not seen the many places within this thread where it's been stated that multiple Cowboys media members (Broaddus, Hill) have said they've been told the team views him as a 1-technique (i.e., NOT a 3T)? Believe me, I'm not just throwing stuff out there like I know it because I'm awesome... I only know what I read, just like everyone else.
