There have been multiple options available even since the market dried up. As far as a pass rusher, Freeney is probably the best of the bunch and if he comes for a vet minimum deal and maybe some sack incentives, then it's hard to find a good reason not to sign him. If he doesn't work out and we cut him he still isn't much of a hit at that rate. He had 8 sacks in 11 games last year. That would have led our team. He would only be here for one reason...pressure on passing downs. He wouldn't have to play the run at all. And since we have two guys that are going to be on the suspended list to start the season, he wouldn't even technically be bumping a "good" player off the roster. Lawrence and Gregory won't count against the 53 until they are activated if I recall correctly.
The argument against him is would we keep him or even have any interest if not for the 4 game suspensions of Lawrence and Gregory? The answer to that is probably no.
Right now we have a lot of bodies at both DT and DE. Do we want a progress stopper like Freeney who is on his last legs or do we want to roll with the young guys?
