Eagles DC Vic Fangio says kickers today should get an asterisk, predicts Aubrey hits from 70

Kickers like to break the seams in by squeezing them to make them easier to kick. And they also wipe them down because brand new footballs tend to be slick (ask Tony Romo in the 2006 playoffs).
Although it wasn't against the rules at the time, that was still dirty pool. And the league knew it too since it immediately changed that rule.

This is what I got from the google AI when I asked about the improvement in field goal kickers over the last 20 years:

Long-Distance Kicking:
The most dramatic improvement has been in kicks from 50 yards and beyond.

  • Historical Context: In the 1960s and 70s, success rates for kicks over 50 yards were in the teens to low 20% range.
  • Modern Performance: By the 2000s, this rose to about 50%, jumping to over 55% in the 2010-18 period.

  • Recent Trends: In the 2020s, success rates for kicks of 50-plus yards have been hitting 70% and beyond, a nearly 30-percentage point increase from the 2010-18 period

The irony of a coach of the Eagles claiming advantage lol.

This is the first I’ve heard of “kicking balls” advantage.
It's pretty obvious that they go farther than they used to go. Balls went from 55 yards to 70 yards overnight. The league did something to the balls.

Does it really take genius people to realize that in the last 10-15 years kids have started learning how to kick since the time they were three years old. Kids are spending thousands of dollars per year on kicking coaches, clinics, and summer camps now. There are 12 year olds hitting 50 yarders all over YouTube. Things are different now folks, wake up.

50 plus yard FGs are basically a chip shot for modern day NFL kickers.

The guys point was changing how defenses must plan with kickers attempting and hitting longer field goals in conjunction with the new kick off rules. Teams can quickly get into field goal range and that’s a challenge for DCs in the contemporary NFL.

This may surprise some here, but the NFL does not revolve around only the Dallas Cowboys. I know all officiating crews have it out for the Cowboys and routinely call games trying to make the Cowboys lose. And, of course, the commissioner hates Jerry so he encourages the league office to do what they can at every turn to adversely affect the Dallas franchise.

The game, the rules, the equipment, in the NFL changes over time. This guy has the same challenges Eberflus has. He’s discussing one of them. He’s not taking a swipe at the Cowboys. And if Aubrey is such a significant weapon why isn’t he signed to an extension? He’s an RFA in just over five months. The Packers already have a good kicker. If a team doesn’t know if they want to keep Aubrey they clearly have no plan for the future.
Ill have to rewatch the clip.

I didn't hear anything about new kickoff rules. I heard him talk about the ball, and placing an asterisk for distance. Not sure how the new kickoff rules would help a kicker make longer kicks.

Also really not sure what you're going on about. I didn't come close to broaching most of your various topics here.

He's right. I mean, Nick Folk just hit a 58 yarder, longest of his career, in his 18th year.

No idea why the NFL would do this except they always think more scoring is better, like we're all simpletons.

Pretty deadly combo when you have the #1 offense and a grim reaper of a kicker!
Not to mention a pretty good kick returner.

There will be times where all the offense needs is one 1st down to be in Aubrey's range.

There is literally over a million kids playing youth soccer in the country every year. Kicking talent is bound to surface. Add in the improved kicking training and techniques used from the other sport that kicks the ball every few seconds and you get kids taking that experience into high school, college, and the NFL. There are high school kickers that have made 60+ yard kicks.

I will make sure my child knows how to kick a damn football.

I hope he gets a chance to hit a long one before the half at Denver.

Super Bowl winning kick?! Maybe

They just wanted to make it more exciting. Kind of like when baseball had the steroids going. Now with the long distance kicks, teams just need seconds to get into scoring position at the end of the game which is what we saw in the Packers game.
