Eagles DC Vic Fangio says kickers today should get an asterisk, predicts Aubrey hits from 70

So he is saying the friction of the ball changed and that is all it takes to have them hit it further? I don't buy that is such a major advantage. I think kickers are trained different have better technique and mentally approach the kick with way better and stable mindset. It is just a combination of things.

I do think in the near future they need to make the goal posts more narrow. I'm sure that's not going to be an easy or cheap change but something has to change. I didn't buy the red zone to watch soccer. This is American football ******! Score some freaking TDs.

That or make FGs from further out count for less points. I know that's counter intuitive but think about it for a min.

He’s talking about all kickers. His team’s kicker struggled last year, was missing almost every from FG 50+ yards, now he’s making them seemingly effortlessly.
Yeah but kickers are getting better. Kickers have always been able to kick 60 yards. The accuracy though is the problem but at the same time it’s like teams going for 2 point more frequent or going for 4th down all game.
It's pretty obvious that they go farther than they used to go. Balls went from 55 yards to 70 yards overnight. The league did something to the balls.

Best special teams?

They are one of the most penalized units in the NFL.
I never said they weren’t penalized. I think they got the best kick returner in the league, solid punter and best kicker. Coverage unit doesn’t seem great but I mean maybe that debatable.

He’s talking like they are “juiced” though. Based on what he’s saying they are just footballs they get accustom to all week long?
It is ironic considering the league has been trying to ban a play that his team uses constantly and is a massive proponent of why they have been so successful the last 5 years lol.

I am not sure what he is saying. Is he suggesting the kickers who condition the balls are cheating? Did the NFL change the specs for the ball used for kicking?

I love Aubrey but if the point is the kickers are out of control, I agree. We don't want too many 65 or 70 yard FGs in the NFL. It's like juiced balls in baseball, or golf. Equipment enhancements are fine but at some point it does become a problem. 70 yard FGs would ruin the game IMO. Although it is called football and FGs are one of the 3 times a foot actually contacts the ball on purpose.

Everytime I hear discussions of special teams balls, I think of the sneaky trick Seattle pulled on us in the 2006 playoffs.

The NFL changed the rules after that, allowing each team to control their own special teams balls.

They sent out a new ball in damp weather. Some even say they they slicked it up some...lol.
Either way, brand new, un broken in, balls are slippery.
sneaky

Pat Mcafee talked about it on his show before the season started and suggested it’s a massive change that would advantage kickers/punters. Basically they can prep the kicking balls all week instead of using new ones on game day.
Couldn’t they do that before Brady deflated balls? I don’t think the ball is as big an issue as kickers are like other players. Todays athletes are just bigger, stronger, faster

No they are not. This is the longest running urban myth in football.

Bob Hayes played in the 1960s. There hasn't been anybody faster than him since.

Larry Allen played in the 90s, and 00's. There's nobody stronger than him since.

Kevin Gogan played in the 90s. There ins't anybody bigger than him since. He was the size of Andre the Giant.

That's just Cowboys players to counter that claim.

If it were true then players today would all be 8 feet tall, run a 9 second 100 meters, and bench 1 ton.

I know smh. It’s slayed something with this team. Even when we had a good defense was bad.

Exactly, we can never seem to have a balanced good team. We always have one phase off. Our offense and defence was good in 2022, but our special teams was useless. Now, we have an elite offense and special teams (much like 2013), but our defence is useless. 2017? We had a solid special teams and defence, but our offense was useless (in part, because of the Zeke suspension). It's maddening.
