Eagles Exec Takes Shots At Cowboys

"Joe Banner took a few shots at the already reeling Dallas Cowboys today when he told the Eagles' web site he would would not have traded three draft picks in 2009, including a first- and third-rounder, to the Detroit Lions for wide receiver Roy Williams. "I mean, they paid a lot,'' said Banner, who confirmed the Eagles (3-3) did attempt to trade for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez prior to the Oct. 14 deadline."

"Time will tell. I wouldn't pay that much for a player like that.'' The injury-ravaged Cowboys (4-3) also sent a sixth-round selection and picked up Detroit's seventh rounder next April for Williams, a 2006 Pro Bowler who was thrown to only twice in Sunday's 34-14 loss to the St. Louis Rams and did not register a catch. While addressing the team's approach to improving the roster, the Birds' president took yet another swipe at the Cowboys. "Our goal is to win a Super Bowl, forget win a playoff game, which is something they are still working on,'' Banner said. Dallas, which defeated the Eagles 41-37 Sept. 15, have not won a playoff game since 1996."

While I can appreciate Banner's "here and now" tone and he has a point that might make the Eagles riff-raff fanbase snicker, yes, we have not won a playoff game in over a decade.

But, apparently he has failed to look in the Eagles Trophy Case and see the complete lack of Lombardi Trophies.

I would much rather be an organization working on trying to win a playoff game WITH 5 SUPER BOWLS IN THE BANK...than be an organization trying to win it's FIRST Super Bowl. What a laughable POS!

Hello! Dallas has won 5 Super Bowls, which is something the Eagles are still working on - winning one that is. (They're 3-3 this season at that - and we did manage to beat them).

I can't believe an Eagles executive tried to criticize the Cowboys by mentioning SB victories.

I have news for Banner-you have TWO #1's, TWO #2's, AND a Pro Bowl CB that wants out...and you STILL think trading away a 1 and a 3 is TOO much for an impact player that'll make Andy Reid's overrated pass-happy playbook look Bill Walsh-esque?:laugh1:

Craziest statement ever.

Our goal is to win a super bowl not a playoff game? Something the Boys haven't done. Is that what he said. Are you kidding me!

Hello Ding Dong - can you count to 5? As in those five damn Lombardies sitting in the entance way at Valley Ranch.

What an idiot.

Yup, you're right, Mr. Banner. But here's the thing, we've won 5 of your goals, which is something you've been working on since 1966.

and to get to your " goal ", you need to get to the playoffs..

good luck with that one, Mr. Banner.

While I like the Roy Williams pickup, I agree. We clearly overpaid for him. He doesn't exactly light the world on fire say the way Larry Fitzgerald does. On top of it all, all the draft choices came in our up and coming draft rather that at least spreading them out over more than one draft. At the rate we paid, I would expect 1k yard season every year at the absolute minimum.

btw, I don't think it was a shot at the Cowboys. I think he was just giving his opinion on the trade. I sure he was proded for it.

Can we wait until we have Romo throwing the ball to Roy in a game before we value or devalue the trade for him?

It's nice bringing up our 5 SB's in response to Banner, but the fact remains that we haven't done squat in 11 years.

If the roles were reversed, and Jerry made a comment over how the Eagles have zero SB wins...we would get pillared by BSPN.

*Shrugs* I really could care less what an Eagles executive has to say on anything, really, much less on the topic of wide recievers.

I absolutely agree we overpaid for him. I did not want to surrender a first round choice and then adding the third made it bad for me because I do not view Williams as elite. He is not a Fitzgerald or even Boldin for that matter and really has had serious issues being consistent. So yes, Banner is probably right in his statement. You are also correct that unless we get a consistent 1000 yard receiver out of the deal, then we did overpay. There is no way you can get around that unless you are simply being hopelessly apologitic.

Yes, but his justification for it was wrong and quite ignorant. Like I said before, it was to please their clueless riff-raff fans.

Excellent point. Their one Super Bowl in the last 20 years came as a direct result of getting a real WR. He probably needs to spend less time minimizing WR impact and more time wondering why he feels it is necessary to get smaller egos to placate Donovan McNabb's insecurities.

Honestly winning playoff games is nice but the goal is the superbowl. Who really gives a damn if you win a playoff game or two along the way if you never achieve your ultimate goal.

Do you think the Patriots are going around saying - At least we won 2 playoff games last year.

And don't hand me that -"you can't win the super bowl without winning playoff games". No ****.

If all anybody's worried about is recent history then we're 1-0 against them this season. Maybe they're the ones who haven't done squat.

Neither have the Eagles, based on Banner's logic. If winning Super Bowls is their goal, then they have NEVER achieved their goal. It was a stupid statement.
