Eagles in mix for Jared Allen

The report from the Delco (Pa.) Times that the Eagles have inquired about Jared Allen has been out there all day and we’ve confirmed that Philadelphia is trying to get involved. The question now becomes this: Are the Eagles serious players in the bidding for the Pro Bowl defensive end or is Chiefs President Carl Peterson simply trying to use them to gain additional leverage in talks with the Vikings?

It’s probably the latter. The report said the Eagles proposed sending cornerback Lito Sheppard — who is almost certainly going to be moved before next season — and draft picks to the Chiefs. The Eagles, however, did not offer up their first-round pick.

If the rebuilding Chiefs are indeed asking the Vikings for first- and second-round selections — the Vikings are offering their first- and one of their two third-round picks — there is no way Kansas City is going to take a package that doesn’t include the Eagles’ top choice. Philadelphia, by the way, will pick 19th in the opening round. That is two picks after the Vikings and one ahead of Tampa Bay, which also has interest in Allen.

As for this tentative visit Allen is supposed to take to visit the Bucs, as far as we know it still has not happened. Time is running out on the Bucs and honestly it remains difficult to believe Tampa is in a position to give up draft picks when it only has five in this weekend’s annual selection process. (Fran Foley’s description of the draft.)

The Vikings appear to be in good shape in the Allen’s sweepstakes but obviously patience is going to be a key as this process continues to play out.

Last I read was that the Vikes have upped their offer to 2008 1st rd and 3rd round picks and are now offering their 2009 2nd round as well. That will be hard to pass up if true.

True, but Lito is a VERY good corner. Chiefs need help there.

Plus they are giving picks.

EAGLES SHOWED INTEREST IN ALLEN
Posted by Mike Florio on April 22, 2008, 10:33 a.m.
Though it now seems that the Minnesota Vikings are the favorites to land defensive end Jared Allen from the Chiefs, the Eagles apparently were one of the teams that at least kicked the tires regarding the possibility of acquiring the NFL’s 2007 sack leader.

Per Bob Grotz of DelcoTimes.com, the Eagles offered cornerback Lito Sheppard and draft picks, but not a first-rounder, to the Chiefs for Allen.

Even if a deal could be struck with the Chiefs, the Eagles would still have to work out a jaw-dropping contract with Allen, less than two months after signing cornerback Asante Samuel to a big-money deal on the first day of free agency.

Our guess at this point is that Allen has decided he wants to play for the Vikings, and that the only question is whether the move happens via a trade or the signing of a post-draft offer sheet that the Chiefs opt not to match.

Kearse was a Free Agent for them not a trade. This way they'd lose picks too.

I haven't been following this story, but why on earth is Kansas City trying to trade him?

Is this another integral step in the Herm Edwards "How to Ruin a Franchise in 10 Easy Steps?"

I wonder the same thing... I think it's contract-related.

Unless... They suspect that he can't control his DUI ways.

Otherwise, why would you give up a stud like Allen?

Someone please explain this comment to me. Allen isn't a FA and that deadline has passed anyway.

Just for picks to "rebuild" the franchise.

Ah...yes. Maybe they can get a young dominant passrusher out of one of those picks.

Hey, you asked why they were trying to trade him, not if they were smart. :D

I think he said something along the lines of he didnt want to resign with them

but the guy is prob one screw up away from at least a one yr ban...personally I hope the eagles trade a bunch of picks and players to get him, sign him to a 70 million contract with 30mils guaranteed and then he celebrates by tying one on and getting nailed for another dui...

He's a franchise player, not a RFA
