Really this seems like an insane amount of money for someone who has never made the pro bowl at a relatively shallow position and has never got more than 4 TDs in a season.

He has shown some promise but you guarantee 20 million for promise? I would've let him play out his contract.

The kid has shown substantial improvement each year he has been in the league. Not to mention it looks like he may have turn the corner in the last four games making 35 catches for 450 yards. I'm not sure this isn't a fantastic signing. Grabbing the guy before the media anoints him. Just like the Cowboys do occasional with their players. (Ratliff, etc) They get burned sometimes too (Miles Austin, etc)

I understand the logic behind the signing but truthfully, he hasn't even shown he is an upgrade over Brent Celek statistically yet. His career high in touchdowns were 4 in his rookie season.

Regardless, all this contract will do is inflate the TE market. A host of tight ends will be lined up to make more than him within the next couple seasons...makes it almost a blessing in disguise that Escobar hasn't turned out.

Yea, it's also hard to gauge how valuable he'll be in whatever their new offense looks like. I hope the move blows up in their face regardless.

You might want to recheck your facts. Ertz has surpassed Celek overall the last two years and damn near did it in his rookie season. Besides, if you look at Celek, he has pretty much be in decline since 2012.

What I meant is that is that Celek was a better player statistically, at the same point, than Ertz is now...and Ertz is Celek's replacement.

Same amount of targets but Celek had 8 touchdowns and almost 1,000 yards in his 3rd season.

Regardless, I think 20 million guaranteed is way too much for a tight end that hasn't produced as of right now. I could be wrong but they are surely paying for future production instead of paying him what he has earned so far.

I'm guessing Fletcher Cox is going to want over $100M for 5 years. And the Eagles have to find (and pay) a QB, assuming they don't roll with Sanchez as a starter. And their OL needs two or three players. And their DBs could use an infusion of talent. That is a lot of money they have to pay.
