WESTBROOK FALLS $9 MILLION SHORT OF HIS GOAL
Posted by Mike Florio on August 8, 2008, 5:45 p.m.
The initial reports are out regarding the new contract signed by Eagles running back Brian Westbrook.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Westbrook will get $21 million over the next three years. As we’d heard it, however, he wanted $30 million.
Escalators based on individual performance and team success could push that number to $24 million.
The contract also includes $13 million in new money, beyond what he was already due to earn.
The 52-page document was inked on the artificial deadline imposed by agent Todd France, who was hired not long ago to get the deal done. France also used the occasion to take a back-handed shot at his predecessor, Fletcher Smith.
“I can’t speak to why the deal didn’t get done before, but I know we kept hammering away in order to do something that made sense for the player,” France said. “We set a timetable with the team, so this would be dragged and for whatever reason, we were able to get it done.”
