Mysterious absence coming for Joselio Hanson
Posted by Mike Florio on November 11, 2009 1:33 PM ET
On the same day that the Eagles lost cornerback Ellis Hobbs for the rest of the season, a report has surfaced that cornerback Joselio Hanson could be gone for roughly a month.

Per DelawareOnline.com, Hanson will be out for unspecified reasons.

"I'm just going to say that the NFL don't treat players the same," Hanson told Geoff Mosher of DelawareOnline.com via text message.

Bottom line? It looks like a four-game suspension under the substance-abuse policy or the policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances.

Ellis Hobbs will miss the season

Acquired for a pair of fifth-round draft picks on draft day, Ellis Hobbs was fitting in pretty well as a Philadelphia Eagle. He was usually the team's nickel back and gained the the primary kick return job during the season.

Hobbs' season is now suddenly over because of a neck injury suffered Sunday night against the Cowboys. The team announced Wednesday that Hobbs will be placed on injured reserve.

Rookie wideout Jeremy Maclin took over for Hobbs on returns Sunday, and is likely to get more work there. Joselio Hanson should get more consistent playing time at cornerback with Hobbs out.

Most famous for giving up the game-winning touchdown to Plaxico Burress in the Super Bowl, Hobbs will bring 47 games of starting experience to free agency next year. (And plenty of quotes for the collection of reporters that cover him.) The Eagles could bring him back as a restricted free agent if there is no new collective bargaining agreement.

I don't remember seeing Hobbs get hurt during the game.

Hey, Hanson of course the NFL doesn't treat all players the same. Even though there have been plenty of star players that have faced suspension to an extent there are some different standards. Everyone knows that and you should have thought about that before you took your chances on whatever drug you chose to do.

PHILADELPHIA - The Eagles’ defense just lost two key contributors in its secondary.

About an hour after coach Andy Reid announced that cornerback Ellis Hobbs was lost for the season with a spine injury, a league source told The News Journal that cornerback Joselio Hanson will be out for about a month for an unspecified reason.

Reached by text message, Hanson only responded, “I’m just going to say that the NFL don’t treat players the same.” Reid never mentioned Hanson’s name during his Wednesday morning press conference.

Hanson didn’t elaborate on what caused his leave but I’m hearing that the’s facing an NFL suspension. His response seemed to suggest that. If it’s a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy, Hanson could be suspended for up to four games.

Hobbs and Hanson were major contributors to Sean McDermott’s nickel and dime defenses, which frequently rotate cornerbacks and safeties. Hobbs’ departure also the leaves the Eagles without their top kick returner. Hobbs averaged 24.1 yards per return.

The Eagles signed free-agent cornerback Ramzee Robinson and signed practice-squad cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu to fill both voids.

That's too bad about Hobbs. Hope he gets better.

This, combined with the Eagles very tough remaining schedule, makes me think they're going to have a very tough time getting into the playoffs, let alone competing for the division title.

They still have two very good cb's Samuels and Brown

I wonder if it will impact their ability to be as aggressive on defense as they would normally want to, however?

Doesn't it seem when you think you have to much at a position it always seems to work it's way out?

The Eagle fans were bragging about their CB depth and they just got egged in the face.

I'm sure each of the Chargers 6'5" 270lb receivers are happy to hear about this.

:laugh2:

Those are some pretty big guys.

Samuels looked like crap after he took the incidental leg hit from Felix. He definitely had a concussion and was playing scared.

So, they may be out three CBs. What a shame.:)

Philly is screwed, old in too many skill positions, Dallas had great wideouts and nothing to complement them in the early 2000s as well.

I don't even have to see the film to know it had to be Beuhler that knocked Hobbs out for the year on a kick return. Can there be any other explantion?

That's a rough situation to be placed in. I feel for the one whose hurt. The one who apparently got a 4 game suspension I have no sympathy for.
