Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell was briefly hospitalized after a wreck in East Texas on Sunday, but his injuries reportedly were not serious and he has returned to Austin.

Campbell, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 as a Texas running back and then embarked on a Hall of Fame career in the NFL, was driving eastbound on Interstate 20 near his hometown of Tyler when his car left the road about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the Smith County sheriff's office. An ambulance took Campbell to a Tyler hospital.

Sheriff's officials said they did not know the nature of Campbell's injuries, if any, and the hospital would not comment, citing privacy laws.

An assistant to Campbell said the 52-year-old has returned to Austin, is doing well and plans to participate in activities when the Heisman Winners Association meets here beginning Thursday night. Campbell is one of the guests of honor at the event; he and Texas A&M's John David Crow will be honored at a dinner Friday night.

I saw Earl on TV a few years back and he could barely walk because of the punishment he took on the field (he dished out a little too!!). I'm surprised he isn't severely injured, thank god he's okay.

Met him at his old barbecue place in downtown Austin. He is a year younger than Tony Dorsett, but walks around as if he were much older.

Campbell was awesome in his prime.

He looked great in that Oiler uniform.

The team should still be in Houston and still be the Oilers.

Titans in Tennesse...:puke:

I wonder if anyone (anyone?, anyone?) can dig up that video moment when Earl is run out of bounds during a UT game and he runs into and makes poor ol' Bevo stumble. Now that is power running!

And what up with the name Titans? Well, I guess the Titans got their $100 worth to get that name from a marketing firm.:lmao2:

One play in particular against the rams. He ran over about 5 rams players- all DL and LBs and kept on going. He just flat out punished anyone who tried to tackle him. But he certainly paid the price. Barely in his 50s and he moves like he is 90.

Almost positive that's Bobby Carpenter's dad lead blocking for him on that play, too.

I remember that long sweep he took all the way against the Dolphins on MNF. At the time it was unheard of that a guy that big and strong could outrun everybody like that.

Also -- does anyone remember one time when Earl and Hollywood Henderson met head on? Can't remember if it was a preseason game or what -- it probably was, since we rarely played the Oilers in the regular season -- but it was like they both hit brick walls. I still remember my Boys Club coaches talking about that collision one day in football practice. :)
