Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell was briefly hospitalized after a wreck in East Texas on Sunday, but his injuries reportedly were not serious and he has returned to Austin.
Campbell, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 as a Texas running back and then embarked on a Hall of Fame career in the NFL, was driving eastbound on Interstate 20 near his hometown of Tyler when his car left the road about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the Smith County sheriff's office. An ambulance took Campbell to a Tyler hospital.
Sheriff's officials said they did not know the nature of Campbell's injuries, if any, and the hospital would not comment, citing privacy laws.
An assistant to Campbell said the 52-year-old has returned to Austin, is doing well and plans to participate in activities when the Heisman Winners Association meets here beginning Thursday night. Campbell is one of the guests of honor at the event; he and Texas A&M's John David Crow will be honored at a dinner Friday night.
