Here's an update on outside linebacker Greg Ellis from our Calvin Watkins.

Ellis, who was on crutches, said after the game that he tore his left Achilles tendon but didn't know how it happened. He'll be evaluated Monday.

News from the front lines of football.

Dang. I shared his pain once. Damn thang just snapped. As I was falling I could not figure out why my leg would not extend the way it should. Slow to heal and without proper rehab their might be a lack of function or range.
Too bad, Greg. Hope I did not jinx you after praising you for being consistent as opposed to moss who has been bad for a couple of years now.
He wont be ready until way next season maybe until Jan. 2008.

best of luck, Ellis!

The most serious Achilles injury is usually referred to as a "rupture." It may be commonly called a tear, but I suppose there's a possibility that it's different.

This makes this win extraordinarily bittersweet to me. Ellis has been my favorite Boy for years, and this has been an inspired season for him. I'm having a tough time dealing with this loss.

A rupture is a tear, but a tear doesn't have to be a rupture. The latter is more severe.

Muscle becomes membrotendinosis becomes tendon which inserts into bone. There can be a tear anywhere along the line but most are near or at the insertion into the bone. Tears are graded and can be pulls without macroscopic tears to complete rupture. In fact many times a piece of bone comes off with the end of the tendon in complete tears.

If they diagnosised it on exam then likely its completely torn otherwise you need the MR or CT/XRay.

They'll likely drill a hole at the original site on insertion and reattach it using cadaver grafts if necessary. He may be ready for camp but I've been away too long to give estimates on recuperation times anymore.

If its not completely torn then we'll have to wait and see what happens over the next few weeks to months but I'll wager big bucks he's out for the year plus.

That's too bad. Who would have thought we'd bemoan the loss of "OLB" Ellis? And it's a big loss. :bang2:

Thanks Doc...the prognosis isn't heartening, but your explanation is clarifying.

Any thoughts on total recovery probabilities?

Is this a most likely scenario? If it was completely torn, wouldn't he not be able to walk on it like he was doing during the game, and wouldn't it be in a boot?

Ellis was by far our best and most consistent pass rusher...this is the time for demarcus to quit rushing like a lightning fast robot and bust out some of those karate moves he learned, because with our safeties we need pressure on the QBs...
let's hope for a full recovery for Greg, classy guy.

You can't dorsiflex your foot very well (push it towards the floor...stand on your tip toes) but there is another muscle which can. You can't play though. It has to be fixed. There is no need for a boot yet and many people walk around with it torn. But they don't play sports very well esp professionally.

Like I said LTN I'm too far removed to offer specific recuperation times any more. They continue to get better after orthopedic procedures and have shorter and shorter periods of recuperation as orthopedics continues to advance (faster than most fields of medicine). And often the affected joint is as good or better than before. I'll look into achilles tears as they seem to be a little farther behind knee operations and recuperations. And an achilles isn't a joint.

Let's wait and see if the rumored tear is complete and go from there.

I'd 'guess' next camp would be pushing it pretty good.

But I do expect him back.
