Source: Jacoby Ellsbury, Yanks agree
Updated: December 4, 2013, 12:18 PM ET
By Jerry Crasnick | ESPN.com

Free-agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has reached agreement on a seven-year contract with the New York Yankees pending a physical exam, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

According to multiple reports, the deal will pay Ellsbury $153 million over seven years and includes an option for an eighth year that could increase the overall value of the contract to $169 million. Ellsbury's deal exceeds Carl Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox in December 2010.

Yet they still have money for Cano. Crazy

Maybe. Seattle is getting involved and it just depends on how much NY wants to spend. They are going after a 1 or 2 starting pitcher as well and they might sign a closer as well. They will probably lose Granderson so that's 15 Million off the books. Pettit is gone so that's another 12 Million off the books. Kuroda is probably gone so that's another 16 Million off the books. Hughes is gone so that's another 7.5 Million off the books. Mariano is gone so that's 10 Million. ARod is going to get suspended so again, that's another 25 Million plus, whatever was saved from 2013. Yankees have a lot of cap to work with right now.

The radio up here said that Seattle offered 200 mil and the yanks offered 170 mil. Not sure on how many years. Still I hope the Rangers get him. I can dream, right?

Yankees could still sign Cano and IMO, all the talk of Seattle is a little convenient. It might be true but then again, that's a lot of money to pay for Cano for 8 years. Would Cano play out that contract (ARod.. cough...cough...)? At 31, it's not impossible to still be playing at a high level at 39/40 but the odds are that his production will fall off before then. It's been rumored that the Yankees are interested in Raul Ibanez of Seattle and are possible suitors for Carlos Beltran, who Seattle is also interested in. I suspect that Seattle is simply trying to drive the price up for Cano so that the Yankees have less to work with on these other options.

I heard that. 200 for 8 years. I just don't think they can do it but we will see. I think he will stay in New York.

I expect the Yankees to resign Cano, try and resign Kuroda and go after Mashiro Tanaka, if Japanese Baseball can agree on terms with MLB for posting Fees. Tanaka would be a real get for any team if he can be posted. It would take upwards of 20 million just to negotiate with him but, that doesn't hit the cap so it's possible the Yankees and probably a lot of other clubs will be in the running. The number was 50 million which cut out a lot of teams but now that it's around 20, I expect several other teams to come forward. If the Yankees get Tanaka, they are going to be very strong.

I also expect the Yankees to go after another infielder, probably Omar Infanti and maybe one more Bat. That could either be Shin-Soo Choo or Brandon Phillips if they don't resign Cano.

I expect the Yankees lineup to look something like this in 2014:

Starting Pitchers:

CC
Nova
Kuroda
Tanaka

(Possibly Michael Pineda if he can get healthy. Brett Anderson could also be a trade option here)

Relief:

Phelps, Warren, Huff and/or Pinada in some combination.

Closer:

David Robinson

(Yankees may still go get a closer but I think that only happens if Cano doesn't sign)

Catcher:

Brian McCann

(Backup Catcher is Probably Cervelli or Romine. Might be Gary Sanchez if the club feels like he's spent enough time in the Minors)

1st Base:

Texeira

(Wells would be the Backup at 1st but, if Infante were signed, he plays all 4 infield positions)

2nd Base:

Cano

(Or Brandon Phillips if Cano is not signed)

SS:

Jeter

3rd Base:

Yuokilius (if healthy)

(Possibly Infante if the Yankees decide to sign him)

Untility Infielders would be Nunez (who could start if the Yankees decided to use Jeter at DH), Infante (If the Yankees decide to sign him) and Brendan Ryan.

Outfield:

Gardner LF
Ellsbury CF
Soriano RF

(Unless the Yankees sign Shin-Soo Choo, then Choo is probably the starting RF and Soriano might be traded)

Utility OFs are Suzuki, Soriano (if Yankees sign Choo or if not traded), Wells and/or Almonte.

Youkilis and Teixeira might be one of the worst corner IF duos there is. Good luck relying on two old guys coming off serious injury (could say the same about Jeter @ SS) not to mention neither guy was doing much last year even before they went down.

Think they'll sign a proven closer like Balfour instead of going with Robertson who doesn't have dominating stuff.

Actually I like the signing of Kelly Johnson better than that of Ellsbury.

Sign Eric Chavez and platoon the two of them at 3B. And Johnson can substitute some at 1st and 2nd.

I might agree with Youkilis but I am not inclined to agree about Teixeira. He's probably the best defensive 1st Baseman in MLB. I agree that injuries have hurt Texiera the past two seasons but they are not career threatening injuries and his prognosis is very good on his rehab and return. He only had 53 at bats before he went out last year so it's hard to know anything there. He is notorious for starting slow anyway. I think he's going to have a good year. Youkilis, that's another story. He has a back injury so who can say?

Jeter may not be the starting defensive SS. He may be the DH if they sign Infante, which could very well happen.

Teixeira's making $22.5 mil each of the next 3 years so he'd better come back and produce. That lineup still has some major holes, as does the rotation.

I heard Cashman on an interview this morning. He basically said that the Yankees are far from finish in off season moves. He said they may not get every player they are targeting but they plan on bringing in a lot of help this off season. Will be interesting to see what happens there.

I'm pleased with what the Yankees have and haven't done. No way would I have spent $200 mil on Cano.

Me either, or signed him to a deal longer then 7 years. You are just asking for trouble there.

Being reported that the Yankees are close to a 1 year deal with Koruda. That's huge for the Yankees because he gives them a lot of innings and throws well for them when they can use him right. He's an excellent 3rd or 4th man in the Rotation. If they can finish that off and get Tanaka, they are going to have a great starting rotation. With Cano gone and Granderson going to the Mets, the Yankees have a lot more cap all of a sudden.

Yep. I'm not losing perspective with the loss of Cano. I think that payroll can be used effectively elsewhere. And if Koruda signs, that's 3 starters in the hopper.

Word is, Koruda and the Yankees have already agreed to terms.
