Emmitt Smith: Pacman must make better choices

Updated: May 3, 2008, 4:29 PM EST

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Emmitt Smith has some advice for suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones: Stay out of trouble.

"As long as you're not killing anybody, getting anybody shot at and going to jail, then I don't have any issues," said Smith, NFL career rushing leader. The former star running back for Dallas was visiting Cowboys rookie minicamp Saturday.NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Jones last year for repeatedly violating the league's personal conduct rules. He's been arrested six times and has been involved in 12 matters requiring police intervention.
"Your personal life is your personal life," Smith added. "Some of the choices you make are not some of the choices I would make. As long as you're out here on the practice field performing like you're supposed to and not getting into any trouble. I'm not going to tell you what you should be doing."
The Cowboys acquired Jones from the Tennessee Titans last week, and Smith said he thought it was a good trade to bolster the Dallas secondary.
"Pacman is a grown man," Smith said. "He understands the do's and don'ts, the rights and wrongs. He has choices to make. Hopefully he starts making better choices."

Here's what he really wanted to say. "Don't be like me, and insist on staying in the league and getting carries for 3-plus years after you can no longer gain any effective yards, like me, knowing I had too much pride and selfishness to step down, and could have let someone else that's better do the job so the team can start finding my replacement".:puke: "Now, I feel better".

Pacman needs to make better choices. Intriguing. Has Emmitt stated whether or not grass is green?

I didn't say Hambone, but we needed to see what he had too just so we knew. We could have then got one with finding a real one. Emmitt nor Hambrick were the answer, but we didn't know that untill we got rid of overpaid underperforming Emmitt.

Quite possibly the dumbest take I've ever read.

It's not Emmitt's responsibility to "step down" and "let" the Cowboys find a replacement. His only responsibility is to give 100%, which he did his entire career.

If the Cowboys felt like Emmitt was a problem, then it's on them to find a better runner. You act like Jerry had no choice in the matter.

They decided after 2002 that it would be best to let Emmitt go, and lo and behold... the backup folks were clamoring for (Hambrick) ended up being a DOWNGRADE. Admit it: you were one of those people, weren't you?

Oh hell... Emmitt can't even speak in complete sentences.

Someone's editor should be fired...

They decided long before that, but didn't have to guts to get rid of him, public perception and loyalty got the best of Jerry. And yes, your right on this one, it was Jerry's fault that he was still here so long. And I did want Hambrick to get more carries, but he wasn't any worse than Emmitt. That's the only way you can get on with the business of finding a replacement is to start the best guy you think you have. We weren't going anywhere with Emmit that's for sure and he was sucking too much of the salary cap too. Players that make too much and give too little kill a team in today's salary cap football. I've never been so glad to see someone go as Emmitt. Although, he was great for quite a few years for sure.

Hindsight says that we would have been better in 2003 with Emmitt vs Hambone. But at the time we could not know that. Emmitt was clearly fading and was too expensive to keep.

i was looking in espn the mag and they had a good idea that some of the vets on the team should talk to pacman and lay down the law like players would have done back in the day.
