Emmitt says Tomlinson could break his record

Although the workhorse running back is virtually obsolete these days, Emmitt Smith said Thursday that Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson could break his career rushing record.

``Anything's attainable,'' Smith said during a visit to Valley Ranch. ``He's doing what he needs to do off the football field, that much i know.''

Although 6,034 yards behind Smith, Tomlinson remains on pace to match the former Cowboy great. Through 140 games, Tomlinson has rushed for 12,321 yards. Smith had 12,347 yards through his first 140 games.

``It was tough on me being the first, second and third-down back,'' Smith said. ``The problem was the Cowboys couldn't find anybody they could trust to be the third-down back. They were trying to find a third-down back. I knew the offense very well so I would do things that some other running backs wouldn't do. Blitz pickup? Not an issue with me.

``With L.T. and where teams are nowadays, they have a third-down guy where all he does is focus on that. You've got a Marion Barber concentrating on first and second along with Felix Jones, and so the third-down guy's Tashard Choice, and he comes in, all he has to know is blitz pickups. It's a little easier that way.''

I know it's been said numerous times already but I think for our playoff push we should rotate the backfield. Felix and Tashard one and second down backs and MBIII Third down back and the finisher as he was before. I think Tashard definitely proven to us that he could handle it.

Tomlinson is already slowing down and is not going to break Emmitt's record.

Poor Emmitt. Every time he opens his mouth anymore he looks worse and worse. LT is done. Look at his last two years and then look at his games this year- he is all but gone.

Yeah, I didn't wanna sound like a homer but I honestly didn't think Tomlinson was that great to begin. I mean when he was talked about it was always about him whining about something. He's around 4k yards left and I only think he'll get 2 thousand yards before he retires. Only person I think could possible get closer would be Chris Johnson but it's hard now-adays with split duties back there.

He is 6k away from the record. I

LT has gone down in yardage totals each of the past 3 seasons since his career high in 2006.

1815 yds(5.20 avg) in 2006
1474 yds(4.68 avg) in 2007
1110 yds(3.80 avg) in 2008
561yds (3.34 avg) in 2009

That is not a good trend. He is on pace for only 785 yards this season. The rumors are that he won't be a Charger after this season. I do think he has been great. He is not over rated at all.

I do not see how LT gets the record. His yards are way down and shares the backfield more than ever before. He would need to be in the league 8 years averaging 750 yards per.

Ya, Emmitt doesn't do well when he opens his mouth or tries to use his brain.

Portis killed his chances by getting hurt this year.

Just 494 yards in a prime year of his career... he'll be 29 by opening day 2010.

Don't get it twisted Tomlinson was great he broke a couple of records. Chris Johnson is great now. But Tomlinson was the man in his prime. However, like everyone time catches up to them.

He'll play long enough till he breaks it. I'm glad Emmitt played long enough to pad his stats because LT is gonna stick around to the point where he is average 3 yards per carry for some cellar dwellar just to break the record. With 0 Super Bowls and no significant playoff performances.

Anyoe else find it funny that Emmitt has no clue.....even in things concerning the records he holds?

C'mon Emmitt....just retire from the limelight already. The lights looked a lot better on you on the field than they do in the studio.

Who do you guys think could actually break his record? I'd go with Chris Johnson

No way in hell.

He doesn't have the build to last very long in this league. He'll amass a ton of yards his first 5-6 years, then disappear.

That record is only going to be broken by someone with a tremendous ability to endure pain and remain productive at the same time.
