Emmitt Smith: Why new Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is better than me

For years the NFL's all-time leading rusher has been calling for his former team to run the ball more often.

So it's no surprise that Emmitt Smith loves that the Dallas Cowboys used the fourth overall pick on Ezekiel Elliott on Thursday night.

"I think they got a very, very good football player," Smith said on 105.3 The Fan's G-Bag Nation show Tuesday afternoon [KRLD-FM]. "I really do. I like Zeke. I've always liked Zeke. I met him through Urban Meyer obviously when Ohio State was here playing in the national championship game.

"I'm looking forward to what he brings to the table. ... I think the Cowboys did a very good job."

Last Friday, Smith welcomed Elliott to Dallas on Twitter. A fan responded to that tweet by typing, "let's just hope he's as good as you were."

Smith replied: "He's better."

Are his interviews severely edited when put in type or has he gone and seen a speech therapist.

Emmitt might be right about of this.....People need to realize he played @ a weight of 209-212LBS. Elliot comes in @ 225LBS...and better speed.

The only thing Elliot needs to prove is can he take the pounding like Emmitt. I have always thought Emmitt was the last of his breed. No RB was ever gonna get the number of carries...or last and be as durable.

It's all in front of Zeke. Now he just needs to go out and prove it. IMO the skills are there. He just needs the heart and desire to stay hungry.

Emmitt didn't take a pounding. He was incredible at taking what defenses gave him. He played all those years because of that. His longevity won't be repeated. Ever.

I agree but, o think it's more avoiding the pounding and not by running out of bounds. It's how to absorb the contact or lessen its impact that is an art of the greatest like Emmitt, Barry, and Sweetness.

In fairness he qualified his statement:

"Well, he is better in the context of his speed, he's faster," Smith explained Tuesday. "In the context of his ability to block, he can block. I just think that he's a smart football player. At the end of the day, I'd like to think that he is better than me because obviously some of those things that we just talked about actually give him the ability to make a house call when he needs to."

While Emmitt has his opinion and I respect it. I have been pounding the board for Zeke since last year and the AD dream whisked away....however until the kid gets 20k yards for his career, has a minimum of 3 SB titles, and becomes the unquestioned leader of his team during his tenure...Emmitt will remain #1 for me. Show us what you got Zeke...show us!

Nobody will ever be more productive than Emmitt. I just don't think it's possible.

For a 5-8 year spurt there may be guys that can produce at a similar level though.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you're looking for records, I can tell you I don't have stats. But what I do have...are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very short career. Skills that make me a nightmare for defensive coordinators like you.

He also was fantastic at not letting defenders get a square hit on him.
