A Former Eagles Fan Will Return As A Foe Dallas' Erik Williams Once Idolized Reggie White. On Monday, He'll Be Blocking Him.

IRVING, Texas — As a youngster growing up in Southwest Philadelphia, Erik Williams naturally hated the Dallas Cowboys, and once, he even shed tears when they had the nerve to beat the Eagles at Veterans Stadium.

That hardly will be the case Monday night, however, when the Cowboys (3-0) and Eagles (3-0) do battle once again, in a division duel that has taken on the aura of an NFC Championship game.

Williams, 24, the one-time Eagles fan, is now the Cowboys' 320-pound left tackle, ready to make the seventh start of his NFL career and take part in an ironic matchup with Reggie White.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"He's nasty," said Tony Wise, the Cowboys' offensive line coach. "He did a lot of that against the Giants. Just throwing his body around. Maybe trying to knee a guy. Trying to slap a guy in the head. Offensive linemen get a bad rap as guys who take punishment all day and then go home. The good ones dish it out, too."

"That probably goes back to growing up in Philadelphia," said Williams, ''where I used to box and play football in the street, on concrete. It was tough back there. Some of these guys were raised in areas where it wasn't so tough. I think to myself sometimes, man, what if he was raised in my neighborhood. I can tell, just by the conversation, some of these guys wouldn't have made it."

EW was my favorite offensive lineman of all time...just nasty and talented. He was HOF dominant for that short amount of time, we will never see an o-line like that again. I guess the greatest respect you can get is to have rules made to negate your dominance.....a lot of rules were made because of those 90s team. I would still take them against any team in history.

When opponent's facemasks were being used as boxing bags it really showed who the real "men" were amongst the lines. EW wasn't the first lineman to do it; he just did so viciously that the league felt they needed to step in (punks). This is at the time it really took that extra "element of crazy" to play line; an attribute falsely associated with LBs/Safeties. Just loved the talent of that Line, but more importantly, the true "crazy" attitude that was more than backed up on the field. All the positive elements of coaching being showcased (great scheme/technique for the talent available) mixed in with mere physical strength that no team could match. The last "Real Bad Boys" of the league.

I also remember him performing a legal at the time but very nasty block on a couple of players like the one I think OhSnap is talking about. Those players had their knees damaged. So he was a nasty player.

Is he available?

No, but the Cowboys have a guy that is nasty and powerful that can jack people up, but they won't play him because they don't want to admit that signing Doug Free to a big contract was a big mistake. The coaches are reported to prefer this player, but "management" prefers to stay with the more experienced Free.
In todays panty waist game he would not last half a season before he would be banned for life.

Hands-to-the-face is the Erik Williams rule just like the horse-collar is the Roy Williams rule.

I'd actually argue it isn't Goodell that is behind these moves, it's the NFL in general. The owners pay big bucks and they don't want to damage their goods and at the same time, the legal repurcussions, especially with concussions ae probably too great for them to handle. That era, where the true physical beasts could actually battle-it-out to a defind degree, is no longer coming back in reality.

It's my firm belief Tom Brady wouldn't have lasted in that league at all.

my favorite cowboy player of all time. If you look at his arms it looks like he didn't even spent alot time in weight room but still had great strength.

true. Idiots keep blaming Goodell but he does not take a crap without permission from the owners. All this is their agenda-parity, PC, etc.

And the Emmitt Smith taking the helmet off while in the field of play rule and the Michael Irvin illegal use of the hands past five yards rule... Don't tell me the NFL doesn't treat this team differently. I'm not saying unfairly, just .... differently.
